I am currently in Utah headed to Reno and then on to the coast. I was told today that I-80 near Truckie is under construction, down to one very narrow lane and backed up for miles. Is there another good way to cross the mountains?

Not the most direct route, but by far the prettest. We drove it yesterday...Take 395 south from reno, till minden nevada, which connects to hwy 88. The most senic hwy in the nation by parade mag. Road is very good, no construction, it is however 9000 at top, with a few good clmbs. We drive it each year heading to sacramento. If you have the time, number of great camp grounds, lake side. And the weather is great this time of year.

Hello,

Head toward Susanville 395 then the 36 to route 44 then go to Shatsa route 89 than up the I-5 very nice drive thru the Mountains or take 44 straight across to Redding.

We have elected over the past 4 years to drive to Carson City from Reno on 395 then use Hwy 50 to Sacramento where you can select either Hwy 5 or 80 for your travel. Hwy 80 was/is a bone shaker.
Hwy 50 is a slower drive and does pass through South Lake Tahoe and around the Southern end of the lake with a couple of steep grades, but the scenery is very enjoyable.

This may add an hour to your overall trip.

Dean,

Thanks for the suggestion to use HWY-50. We are crossing NV on 50 now.
