What is a reasonable number of labor hours to replace the carpet front and rear in my 2003 Magna Haven? I have an estimate from a facility that calls for 28 sq yds of carpet and 24 sq yds of padding. They will have to pull and replace driver & passenger seats, a rotating chair, and the couch up front. I really don't know what's entailed in the rear as far as the bed goes.
I'll come back in a bit and tell you all their estimated mhrs for the install.

Thanks in advance,

Jerry

That sounds like highway robbery, can you imagine paying over $4,000 to replace that little bit of carpet. Some of these service people must think motorhome owners are stupid when it comes to money. But, there are those who will pay it, I wouldn't. I'd find some good old boy carpet installers and have them do it for a lot less than $85. an hour.

As in many areas (-:)!), I'm not an expert on the labor involved with carpet replacement. 48 hours? I don't know if 48 hours is too much? I'd ask a few more questions.
-Is this a one or multiple slide coach? -Are you replacing the carpet on the parts that slide too? -On the part of the carpet that the slide rolls over, do they need to tweak the slides to make access to replace that section of carpet?
Those, along with what you mentioned about removing chairs, and I assume some efforts related to the bed, could add up to 48 hours pretty quick. Sometimes two people will be involved.
Shop rates of $85 dollars are something I would like to pay in the San Diego area. $100-135 hours is not unusual. The shop rates, whatever they are, are usually the same if the shop people are removing furniture, hanging lights, fixing plumbing - or, installing carpet...
Is it lots of money? Yes it is. Is having people skilled in working in RV's a good idea? That is your judgement call.

Best of luck on your decision,
Smitty

Jerry,

For perspective, I had Amazing Creations and Kustom Coach Works, in the Junction City, OR. area, do a complete interior remodel of my '01 36' Intrigue,( two slides), back in '08. The labor cost associated with replacing 135 sq.ft. of carpet was $1800. Charging $4,000 labor sounds like someone is subscribing to "Canada Bill Jones' Motto".... "it is morally wrong to allow a sucker to keep his money".
Hope this helps.

Residential carpet installers are paid by the square yard or square foot- depending on what the retail store dictates in their pricing policy.
Working on coaches is a different ballgame.
Replacing carpet in salon and bedroom- no mention of slides should be a 2 or 3 day affair, for one person.
The customer can help with the demo, if they are physically able and that would cut down on labor expense. FYI

I saw a carpet company specializing in RV installations with three guys do an Installation at Trader Vicks RV park Houston, Tx. in 6.5 hours. They pulled all the sofas, front chairs, gueen bed and computer desk in a 43' Dynasty, installed the new thicker padding and carpet and put it back together. The only thing they screwed up on was the bed room slide. They left one of the power wires to the room slide motor short causing it to disconnect while retracting the slide. I was lucky, found it in 15 minutes.;
TWI 2004 Intrigue 11731. I think the guy paid $2000.00.

Update - hired a local guy that is a former longtime rv repair guy. Final cost (including carpet and padding that we picked out) was $2,500. This included fixing a few little odds and ends he found along the way, one being replacing the tv antenna that I ripped off a few weeks ago (it was stowed but a limb got it anyway).
All the work was done at my house so I was able to check on what was going on periodically. It wound up taking a couple of weeks - we had told him we wouldn't be needing the coach for awhile and he was able to use us as fill work.
I was surprised at the amount of detail work especially in steps, driver's, and slides areas.

I think I got a bargain.
