Dear Group,
All the recent comments about block heaters, running at idle, etc., has me wondering what the fleet owners do in the really cold areas of this country?
Are all the school and city buses in the North east hooked to a power outlet when not running on city streets? I can't imagine they would be hooked for longer then necessary due to the high cost of electricity.
It would be interesting to know what the do. Any comments?
BTW We don't have this problem in Napa. GGGG

We are in the Poconos of PA. Diesel fleet vehicles (including school busses) left sitting overnight outside are plugged in---all the time. What my diesel trucks had were thermostats in the block heating systems that would turn on and off as needed once the vehicle heated up. The acutal cost to keep the engine "warmed" is worth it in the long run. The eingine is only slightly warm, not as hot as when you are driving it. Its part of the cost of doing business in the north country.
Imagine how big a building would be to house 300 school busses for some of the really large school districts? Consider the cost of the building and heating it vs the cost for electric to run the block heaters.
