Hi Gang
Does anyone have any info on highway 82 between Carlsbad and Alamogordo, NM? Is it OK with a motor home and toad?

ddtuttle,
I would avoid hiway 80 up to Cloudcroft and beyond to Artesia. All two lane with a really hard climb up to Cloudcroft then twisty down off the mountain to Artesia. Certainly a beautiful drive but, you will be too busy to enjoy.
I would go up to hiway 70 to Ruidoso. Not sure about the first part up to Ruidoso because I have not driven that road in many years, but it was always better than Hiway 70 going up the mountain. Hiway 70 from Ruidoso to Roswell is new four lane and an easy drive, as is hiway 285 from Roswell to Carlsbad.

If you enjoy driving in the hills then go for it. 18 wheelers drive it and there are plenty of compgrounds on that route. Cloudcroft to the flat land outside of Alamogordo is a 4000' drop over about 13 miles. HY82 is also a US highway. We stayed a week at the Boot Hill RV park in Alamogordo and enjoyed it. If you decide to visit Roswell from Carlsbad then do take US 70.

We done the Alamogordo to Cloudcroft a year ago in our toad. If I recall there are signs that limit the size of rigs using the road. We seen a 5th wheeler trying to get up the hill. Better them than me!!

The road from Artesia to Cloudcroft is a little twisty and narrow with a few hard right angle turns, and
with a few sections of ups and downs. As long as you stay 5 miles under the posted speed and are
prepared to shift down with exhaust break on, no problem. From Cloud croft to Tularosa 2nd and 3rd
gears are your best friends with the exhaust brake on, 7%+ downgrade. I've have driven the road many
times with the 36' Allure, and a few times both ways with the 42' Intrigue.
I am still kicking and not the
worse for wear. If you have driven the mountains of Colorado, two lane roads in the Sierras of
California, or Mountain roads in Montana or Oregon, its just less of the same. The choice of going to
Roswell and Ruidoso allows higher speeds, has fewer curves, more places to stop and rest, and is four
lane most of the way. It will take about the same time, either way. Don't speed from Ruidoso to
Tularosa, the Highway Patrol and the Sheriff like to hide behind billboards, under trees, in Gullies and especially around schools zones on the Indian Reservation.

Hi group, just drove 12 from Fairfield to Lodi (junction with highway 5). Have driven this road many times. It has always been bad but now it is worse then ever and I do not recommend it to any MH driver. On paper it looks like a great way to cut some miles off a trip but be warned.
Road work on the section between Fairfield and Rio Vista has caused several reductions in speed limits and lanes have bee narrowed in places. The are also some bad patches on the surface and sudden changes in direction! The road widening in parts will help in the future but it may be years before complete.
The section between Rio and Lodi does not have the new road work but the existing road surface continues to deteriorate, and the bumps seem to be even larger then last year. This road may shake the fillings from your teeth! Unless you want to test the strength of your coach and your skill as a driver I recommend adding a few extra miles and going around this section.
My wife and two cats support this recommendation (especially Sebastian who was physically sick due to the bumps and turns)

David,
I have only used this road one time. I chose to use a different route than Hwy 12 through this area. Once was enough.

Thanks for the warning about road conditions. I use the road as a test section to make sure my
awnings won't unfurl. It is a good short cut from Napa area to I-5.

Thanks All for the info on Hwy 82. It snowed last night and we decided to take the long way around and drive up to Cloudcroft by car on Monday.
