Someone I met recently went to Rocky Point (Puerto Penasco)as he had for years before. If anywhere in Mexico was safe for Americans, this was it. The corrupt police took his car, took him and then demanded all the money he had on him to get his car back. Draw your own conclusions.

I completely disagree with this comment and suggest that you do a little research before further impacting tourism in parts of Mexico. We have a winter home on the beach in San Felipe (7 years) and have many friends that bring their coach down. The crime you speak of is primarily in border cities (Juarez, Tijuana, etc.) We have had little or no crime incidents (other than normal stuff) and San Felipe is probably much safer than your Texas border town.

This the note I got back from our friends who returned from Rocky Point on Sunday. They were there for two weeks in their RV. I ask him if he had heard anything about the police hyjacking rv'ers.
___
HI: Have not heard of this event. We have a copy of the Rocky Point Times (in print) and you can research with http://www.rptimes.com (http://www.rptimes.com) to find any news item of note. When we travel down we always stop in at our Insurance carrier who is an x border guard. He has some interesting stories of the old days and always has given us a clean report for our travels into RP. So, things do happen, but we haven't heard of any new problems .... especially from the folks at the rv park in Rocky PT.
As always with the bad news I would like to know the details before passing judgment.
BTW, we saw about 30 coaches in various groups go down while we were driving out of town. Its getting busier for their economy.

Linda,I've travel to Mexico for the last ten years racing the Baja 1000,traveled up and down the penisula and never encountered any problems in country. That said we do not travel at night(only during the race)and I know of only one incident that occurred early AM near TJ. I feel if you stay away from the border towns and use common sense when traveling, very safe.

I joined Escapees Chapter 8, Mexican Connection. We went to Cabo San Lucas, Copper Canyon, Cancun, and Vera Cruz. Never had a problem. Mexicans are very friendly and I never felt unsafe. People pay way too much attention to the media. There are problems in some of the border states but it's way overblown.

You maybe able to say that about the California border with Mexico, but the New Mexico and Texas
Border towns are really in trouble. The Cartels have taken over the town across from McAllen, and
Cities across from Brownsville, Larado, and especially El paso, are killing multiples of people everyday.
There is no order in Palomas across from Columbus, NM, with only the Military and a few Federales.
We have over 30,000 Mexican citizens living in El Paso, and supposedly 400,000 people have left for
the interior. TWI 2004 intrigue 11731. This has been going on for over three years, averaging over
2000 murdered a year in Juarez.

We just were in Columbus and walked across to Palomas. No problems there. A bunch of gringos were down there, shopping and having lunch. I would never go to Juarez or Tijuana, but we go down to Rocky Point almost every year.

ygrps-yiv-2103406495 v0003a* { } Everyone seems to have their own opinion of what is going on in Mexico........watch dateline tonite....3/5/09. I personally believe that Mexico is playing it down. .....
Its really safe...until its not.....then what? How do you get your RV into Mexico without going through a border town? Why are there armed guards everywhere?? I guess if you go and you feel safe...then more power to you and enjoy yourself...it is a BEAUTIFUL place to be.....
We have a friend who has a son that built a beautiful home in Mexico.....the officials came thru and told them to get out.....they lost their home...what recourse do you have?? What scares me is that you are at their mercy IF they decide to hassle or kidnap...there is no-one to help you.
