I want to check the hydraulic fluid level for my living room and bedroom slide-outs. I have two sets of conflicting notes. One says that the LR slide should be in and the BR slide should be out to check the fluid level and the other notes say exactly the opposite - i.e., LR slide out and BR slide in. Does anyone know for sure which it is? Also, where is the reservoir for checking this fluid? It's not the hydraulic canister in the engine compartment, is it?

Sorry, I forgot to say that my reservior is in the bay under the drives position. Rectangular tank with a chrome cap.

My information says to have both slides in!!!!
I have topped up the fluid a few times only to find it will 'spit out' any excess. Also be sure you don't get air into the system.

All cylinders must be retracted to check fluid level.
Living Room slide out. The (4) cylinders travel toward the front and rear of coach. When the cylinder is retracted, it has pushed the room out.
Bedroom slide in. The cylinder travels across the room. When the cylinder is retracted, it has pulled the room in.
The reservoir tank is located in the front drivers-side compartment. Should be to the right of auxilary air compressor.

As to excess you will make a real mess if you overfill. The clean up is worth taking the time to fill in small amounts cycle and recheck. Use a straw with wrapper attached it is very hard to see the fluid level. You can color with brake fluid, but it takes a lot in order to see the fluid. I found the straw worked, it just takes several straws.

After you determine the correct method of measuring the fluid level, that is, which slides are in and which are out, fill to the necessary level as dictated on the plug dip stick. Then, run the slides all back in and measure the fluid level again. After this, you'll know what level the fluid needs to be with the slides in and you won't have to remember which is out and in. Works for me.

Regarding checking and topping off the hydraulic fluid for the LR and BR slide mechanisms, I have received:
2 votes for checking fluid with LR slide OUT, BR slide IN.
0 votes for checking with LR slide IN, BR slide OUT.
1 vote for both LR and BR slide in.
I know that the 3rd option is wrong so I'll go with option 1 especially since that response also came from former CC Service Tech Kevin Waite who offers help and parts to us orphaned Country Coach owners. Here's a great big thanks and a plug for Kevin.

Steve from a prior post I recall that Damon Rapozo Guaranty in Eugene has a chart that shows the location of the slide for checking fluid level. He is active on this forum and I am sure he has your data. He is copied on this e-mail

All I know is that my book tells me to check fluid with both slides in. That's what I do.

The reading that gives the fullest reading wins -- all cylinders are retracted forcing the oil to the res. If the fullest reading is low, then add more fluid. You don't want to go for the lowest reading, because when it is filled, and the slide positions reverse (out/in becomes in/out), it could overflow.
Then as someone suggested, put all the slides in, and notch the stick with in/in oil level.

That's a fine process that you suggest. I was just hoping that it was already a known item as to which position the slides were supposed to be in when topping off the hydraulic fluid. Thanks for your input Herb.

Steve, my manual says to check fluid with DRIVER slide room(s) fully retracted and the PASSENGER slide room(s) fully extended. It says remove the silver breather cap and the fluid level shouild only reach the first line on the dipstick. You can use "Dexron ll or a high quality multipurpose automatic transmission fluid (ATF) to maintain proper fluid level."
