Yesterday after leaving Langtry, TX on US-90 our left tag tire blew out. Fortunately, the shoulder was very wide and there was an extra lane for passing and very little traffic. I called Camping World's Emergency Road Side Service who contacted Del Rio Towing (60 miles away) and arrangements were made for a new tire and a road crew. I also notified the Texas State Police since the tire change would require working in the right lane. In about an hour and a half the road service crew and a state trooper showed up. Then a border patrol agent stopped to see if the trooper needed any help. We had an interesting visit while watching the work in 100 degree heat. In about an hour the tire was changed and we were back on the road. Great service from Del Rio Towing and the Texas State Police (who also drove an hour from Del Rio). The only negative note, there were no Goodyear or Michelin RV tires in Del Rio, so I now have a Kumho on the tag. Lesson learned, if you want a specific brand on your coach carry a spare.

Jerry, sorry to hear about your trouble. Blowing a tire can be a dangerous problem. I hate to give up the room to carry a spare. If it was me I would rotate it to the inner duel the first chance I got.

Doug, why would you rotate the new tire to an inner dual? It seems like thats a place it would be hardest to monitor. Just curious.

Based on personnel experience, placing a non-identical pair of tires (same brand, size, age and wear) together on a rear axel will wear out both in no time flat. This is one of the reasons (excuses?) spares are not supplied on heavy RV rigs.
Some commercial truckers carry spares but their situation, wear patterns, cost considerations and more are different from ours.
We have a road service contract, assuming a tire is available (the usually are - agreed not always) it takes little to no more time for the roadside service truck to install the replacement. This assumes no major damage to the coach from the tire failure which makes the spare availability moot and I guess another reason/excuse for not supplying one.
I used to think I wanted a spare. Now I buy new tires earlier rather than later. A full set of new tires is much cheaper than repairing damage from a failed one and might even be only a bit more epxensive than a roadside fix at emergency prices for one tire.
These days, for me, happiness is shiny, new, healthy tires on my rig routinely checked for wear and proper pressures.
