With all this chat on a trip enroute to Canada, it finally got me thinking about Yellowstone from one the participant's blogs. Nicely done posting . .

Never been and would like to keep crowds to a dull roar and have a special time with my significant other. April/May? Too early?

ON LIST, Please. I would also like to avoid crowds and see Yellowstone again. Last time was in the early 1950s, and it was magical. On that trip we also saw the Grand Canyon, and when I went back several years ago, you could not see the canyon for the tour busses. The place was crammed and worn out.
So a trip to Yellowstone with minimal crowds will be great, even if I have to take a four wheel drive in January.

Lon, is the blog to which you are referring separate from our CC here? If so, would you happen to have the blog website address? Thank you. And I think your question is a good one. I'm not sure how early we can easily stay in Yellowstone, but once we can, I'd bet it's fantastic there. We've been there in early July, and it was still a bit chilly. I believe it's May that a couple arrive in Yellowstone whom we've met who are professional photographers and spend the summer there.

Re: trip timing to Yellowstone:
The best way to see about traveling to Yellowstone is to visit their website which will give the various times their campgrounds AND ROADS open. Anytime it's open is a great time to visit Yellowstone! We've sometimes been almost the last ones in the park...then they close most of it until they open for a few weeks in the Winter (at which time you can only enter at certain places and can only travel a limited area...not even with 4wheel drive...) (It's the northern entrance that is open then and one north road, but it's lovely!) Otherwise in the winter you take their snow coaches from place to place...again their website is full of this info.
If you want to avoid crowds, yes, the early Spring is wonderful. I'd go in mid-May-early June...fewer people, but it will be lovely.
Otherwise, Fall is great...late Sept. The park can close anytime then if snow happens, but some of the campgrounds are still open until then. (Fishing Bridge closes earlier in Sept. if I recall.)
You do need to spend quite a few days there...it's a figure 8 loop and just doing one part of the loop each time takes a day...superficially.
We love Yellowstone all the time...have yet to do real winter there...but it's on the Bucket List for when the grandkids can go with us.
By the way, go beyond Old Faithful to see Grand Geyer...MUCH more impressive and goes for almost 20 minutes.
