Title: Start Solinoid FYI

I just replaced that troublesome start solinoid with the NAPA ST80. I thought I should be ok after that. Turns out that there is a diode that goes across the coil terminals. When I installed the new solinoid I was thinking that it was a resistor and not a diode so I paid no attention as to how it came off. When I tried to start it the egine didn't start. After some troubleshooting the light came on. It being a diode it is polarity sensitive. I disconnected one side and the engine started right up. Having it hooked up wrong caused the diode to short the 12v to ground when the key was turned. So I turned it around and all was right with the world again.
I was ready to call for a mobile mechanic just for a simple item as that. In all this talk in past posts on the start solinoid i don't remember anyone mentioning a diode across the coil terminals. Take note if there is one as to its polarity. The end of the diode with the stripe is on the positive terminal.

I always take a digital photo before removing and then refer to that when I am re-installing, that way I don't have to reply on my memory and believe me that is a good thing. ;-)

Thanks Steve, I appreciate the information about the diode. I have had my share of wiring "gremlins" with this coach, but people like you have helped me out by passing along information about problems they have encountered.

Hi Friend, Funny working for Cat We had as you call it a Diode acroos the coil on the Piolot or Mag sw. This was a Back to Back Diode called a Flyback supressor as this would absorb the Magnetic Spike from going to the Engine ECM etc. when current was removed from the coil and doing Damage. My do it your self Customers thought it was a Jumper and removed it. I bought this up when I trained fellow newcomer Tech's. I respect your Fix but But a band would indicate a diode? Thanks for sharing your repair! I will have to check out this on my 99 Allure. BTW whare is this Solenoid on you coach?
