Is anyone familiar with Magicjack? Considering purchasing but cannot speak to anyone live!!!! Cannot figure out if you actually need a land line...or can I just use this with my verizon phone and computer while traveling in RV? If it works seems like a ral good deal!!!

I used to use a MagicJack with my home computer and actually back fed it into my phone system for all outgoing toll calls. Finally our cable company offered VOIP and I dropped the MagicJack. I actually took an old princess trimline phone, my laptop and the MagicJack to Canada for a trip and it worked with the hotel computer line. I was able to call home to PA without any problems while at the hotel all by computer and MagicJack.

Linda,
I tried Magic Jack when they first came out using my laptop, a single line phone and my router. It worked, but the delay in voice communication between both parties was horrible. You had to leave a big gap each time you spoke. I didn't try it hooked directly to the computer, you may get better results.

Hi Linda and Tom,
We have used it and did not have any delay unless we are on the MotoSat dish.
Has worked very well without delay on local WiFi and EVDO.

We use at home and it works great, but I have a high speed internet. Have tried with my AT&T card and the delay in voice communication between both parties is noticeable. The key is the speed of your connection.

Test Your Internet Connection Speeds & Quality of Service
VOIP call quality is determined by a combination of Internet connection speed and Quality of Service. When both are sufficient, call quality comparable to that produced by traditional phone companies results. This is true of any digital phone service, MagicJack included. To be sure that you will not be disappointed with your purchase, we suggest testing your Internet connection speeds and call quality here:
http://www.broadband-help.com/articles/networking/broadband-speed-test (http://www.broadband-help.com/articles/networking/broadband-speed-test)
The test available at this site is designed specifically to determine if your internet connection will support a high quality VOIP phone call. The caveat here is that sometimes the site produced inaccurate results when compared to this test. So we suggest testing repeatedly and verifying speed test results independently.

Re: Magic Jack
We have used it for a few years now and our experience is up and down. At times it is excellent but at other times the connection leaves a lot to be desired - drops calls and sometimes it gives only one-way communication. As others have stated, it depends a lot on your connection. We use a Verizon air card and of course this feed varies due to location.
I would say that it is 50% usable for us. Keep in mind that we tend to end up in many out-of-the-way locations so that could be a factor.
We still have it and usually set it up for use wherever we are.

Linda I am wondering, If you have a cell phone, why would you want magic jack? Isn't that for people with high speed internet who want to eliminate the line line phone?
