The reversed RJ11 wire does serve a function in the electronic world. Most digital data is sent over 4 wire cable. The thing is that the transmit pair on one end become the receive pair on the other end and vice versa. Not all hardware makes the transition at the plug so in that case it has to be handled by the way the connectors are applied on the end of the wire. Both reverse connected and straight connected pre-made cables are available and you have to make sure which one you need as a replacement.
