We just noticed that US 101 south of Fortuna through the Redwoods is restricted to any MH over 40 feet. We are 42. Sounds like a revenue enhancement for CA.
Any comments on CA 299 from Arcata to Redding. I really like the US 101 from Olympia, WA to LA and Indio, CA. It looks like i might have to try to cross over at CA 299 and take I-5, Bakersfield, Mohave, etc.
Any comments on CA 299 will be appreciated.

We have driven from Petaluma to Crescent City so many times on 101 in the last 7 years in our 42' pulling a Honda Odessey I can't count crossing over to Grants Pass on HWY 199 on our way to Home Coming and to thew factory for repairs. Hwy 199 is a fun challenge. We have driven the road to Florence and return to Eureka at least 4 times round trip with no issues. Carol prefers going North because driving South you are on the outside lane and its a long way down some of the bare unprotected cliffs. Its even easier today as they have widened and re routed 101 over the years. But averaging much more than 50 mph can be a chore between Santa Rosa and Eureka. From there North 30 to 35 mph is about it. I've driven 299 in a Car a long time ago, and wouldn't recommend it based on that.
I usually take either HWY 16 or 12 when I cut over from 101 to I5. But if I am in a hurry I just drive I5 all the way from Eugene then cut across on HWY 46 to Bakersfierld and 58 on to Mohave or if I am going to Palm Desert head south off 58 on 395, I215 and I-10. One time I used Hwy 247 and Hwy 62. It was slow but scenic in desert sort of way.

On the Map of restricted roads for over length Motor Homes, Hwy 101 from Oregon to La Area 45 foot OK.
I traveled 101hwy North last spring and the stretch just North of La is horrible. I have friends that live in the LA area and they tell me to take Hwy 126 over to I 5 to miss the bad bad road. Good luck in your travels.
