We will be picking up our coach in Junction City next week to head down to Arizona. We are newbies and not sure about chain requirements and what they mean for our RV. Our intent is to not drive through a pass when "Chains are required". We will simple wait it out. However, am I in jeopardy of getting a ticket if I don't purchase chains and carry them. I'm also towing a toad. Any different requirements because of that. Any insight on this topic would be appreicated.

My past experiance with this, you must carry chains if sign is out that chains are required. If you dont have them at that time. $100 dollar fine. I had to chain up going over the Sisku's, and also at Weed, CA. When they made me chain up at Weed, the road was only wet, and never did see any snow on it on the way over the top. After about 5 min. or so of going up the hill, trucks began flying by with no chains, as the sign had been removed. Once I saw this, I stopped and removed the chains. Next time, if that would happen again, I would detour over to 101 on the coast line, and enjoy the ride. It is beautiful, and not much chance of snow.

If you will drive over to Florence, and head south to Eureka, CA and then get on 101 down to Petaluma, CA you can avoid all the snow on your way to Arizona. TWI

That's the route we took when we picked our coach up the last week of Dec 2004. When we got to Ukiah we took CA 20 through Nice over to I-5. From there you can take Hwy 58 out of Bakersfield through Tehachapi to 395 south and miss a lot of LA traffic.

Right now I-5 through Oregon is in good shape, snow is even almost completely off the roadside at Siskiyou Summit. Today, Wednesday and Thursday are supposed to be a break in the storms. We will be leaving the Oregon Coast on Wednesday to head south and plan on using I-5. There is a lot of saturation on 101 and strong possibility of landslides.
