We are heading to San Dimas, CA (nr Pomona) from Morgan Hill, CA this Friday. I suspect that the traffic on I-210 will be ugly by the time we get there. I am contemplating using 138 to bypass this section of the trip and looking for others' opinions. It's about 45 miles further according to Google maps but might it be less stressful? Thanks.

Hello,

I don't recommend the 138 bypass from I-14 to I-15 through the high desert this time of the year. It goes through Wrightwood ski area through the steep mountains and takes you too far East of San Dimas into Ontario.
I-210 should be perfectly fine especially today which is an MLK holiday. It's normally fine with small rush hour windows.

Best,

I do not think you will save time taking 138. Just tough it out on 210 or wait till traffic clears up about 4am.

Well, just to let you know, the nickname of Hwy 138 is the Death Highway due to the numerous head-on collisions from boneheads that pass on double-double, solid yellow lines with bumps in between. I've take the 210 eastbound during the 5-7PM rush hour, and while it generally slows down on the merge eastbound on the west of Pasadena, it generally has moved along rather well with occasional slow downs for the 605 and 57. I think I'd take the 210 vs white-knuckling the color-blind people who don't seem to realize there's a reason why CA DOT has double-double solid yellow lines with bumps in between. BTW, much of Hwy 138 is still just two lane with a decent grade up over the pass and an extended grade that's I'm guessing 7-8% initially as you descend to I-15. Nothing that full jake brakes, for me a downshift to third, and 5-6 brake applications can't take care of.

Thanks for all the replies, sounds like I'll be taking the 210.
