Just completed a mount for the iPad in my coach and posted some pictures. Worked great and low cost to build. The iPad is a great navigator for the MH.

Jack: What program are you using with the ipad? We have used google maps but found that it is inconsistent at best and very slow at finding your current location.

I'm using Motion X GPS drive. Garmin just released a new navigator for the iPhone/iPad. Both of the programs require a 3g connection to download maps. Both of these programs work well. They are on the app store.

Jack I went looking at the App Store and could only find a Garmin program for the Iphone and not the Ipad. I saw Co-Pilot had a program for North America and used Co-Pilot when it came out a few years back, on my laptop on the dash. They keep killing you with up-date costs at Co-Pilot , so I try to stick with one program , and I like the Garmin program. Maybe I haven't found what you suggest, so if you could point me where I can look, that would be great Thanks , in advance for your help

"Motion GPS Drive" is listed in the app Store as compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 3.0 or later.
I have tried the Motion GPS Drive on my iPod touch and it will require another learning curve. So I'm setting that aside for now. I would be interested in hearing what you think about using this program on the iPad. So far, I find my Garmin and 'Street and Trips' maps are much easer to manage.

I tried Co-Pilot live for the iPad but found the maps were pretty bad, lots of rerouting and jumping around on the streets, I would not recommend it. The Garmin program just came out, its a one time purchase of about $40.00. Motion X is a free program and the developer charges a monthly fee of 2.99 or an annual fee of 19.99 for the voice directions and more detailing on the map, like street signs etc. I used the Garmin program yesterday to go up to Phoenix from Tucson and it works well. It will work with both the iPhone and the iPad, the iPad is a 2X blow up of the iPhone and the graphics are not as sharp as i would like but plenty readable. The display emulates a NUVI. In my car and my MH I have an input from the iPad to the aux port on the radio so all the voice is played through the speakers. The voice on the Garmin is clear, the Motion X is a little more electronic sounding but understandable. Both of these programs require a 3g connection to update maps, but I found both seems seem to work about as fast as a hardware GPS unit.

No problem so far. I'm sure there will be times the sun will be an issue, but have not seen it so far.

I have a friend who likes CoPilot Live for navigation on an iPad. However, the problem with this program and Motion X is that if you lose the wireless connection, you lose the maps which are on the cloud. Then you're flying blind.
The latest version of Google Maps for Android cache the maps so if the signal is lost you still have the map until the map is re-acquired. As someone pointed out, the Android OS can be slow, but each new version is faster and better. The new 4G Android phones that should be available in Feb or March with Gingerbread OS should really be fast.

Motion X's GPS Drive also caches maps. You can 'pre-drive' your route which loads all the maps needed for the route. Even if you anticipate having cell coverage along your route, you can cache maps using faster and cheaper wifi ahead of time.

Greg, you are correct, and apparently CoPilot Live does the same. I currently use Garmin conventional GPS. I like to plan my trips on my home computer or laptop using Garmin software and then upload to the Garmin GPS device. I really would like to be able to do that with a smartphone, but I don't think that exists. So, when you "pre-drive" with Motion X Drive, you have to do that on your iPad, right?

George, yes, you do that on the iPad. I checked this morning since I have updated the app a couple of times since I used it and there is now an option to pre-load maps without simulating the trip. On my last trip I used my trusty old Nuvi alongside the iPad and think next time I'll use only the iPad. I'm not aware of a navigation app which interacts with a computer.
