I've recently purchased a 04 Magna with CAT C-15 MBN1-UP engine and Allison automatic transmission. I would like to check the valve lash on that engine but have been unable to find a way to turn over that engine by hand (manually) and locate TDC (top dead center) to make the adjustments. There is no port on the bellhousing to access the (starter) ring gear and there is no central nut on the flywheel. QUESTION: Can you advise 1) how best to turn over that engine manually, 2) identify TDC and 3) confirm valve lash clearance specifications? THX. Chuck

Are there three bolts holding the front assemble on the crankshaft? If so put a socket on anyone and use that to turn the engine. What I used on the older engines, suspect yours to be the same. As for valve lash, I never did trust the TDC thing and would turn and adjust for each cylinder. Another option is to use a remote starter button and let the starter bump it around.
Does your engine have the go/no go spec's on valve adjustment? Seems the ones I worked on years ago used that to adjust the valves.

Ken here, Retired Cat Tech, Your local cat dealer can lend you a Turning tool. 1/2 inch breaker bar or retchet can be used. The C-15 is a big diesel. Dont use a socket on the damper pully! Ken 99 Allure 30356
