Has anyone in this group adjusted their own valves on a Cummins 6CTA8.3, 325hp ?
It does not look too difficult (or is it?) and I am looking for any tips or suggestions.

Hi Friend, Three years ago I bought our Allure around 55k miles. I was still working at Cat in Tampa. Having done lots of side work for fellow Employees. After buying the Coach I bought the Cummins book into our shop to show fellow engine Techs the Specs. of our C-8.3 330. Just for the heck of it Rich a fellow tech said lets check you overhead! Well after work he and I removed the Valve cover and Checked Intake and Exhaust valve settings. Cat has a different Valve lash much tighter and different valve bridges from the Cummins. Cummins are sloppier. He and I looked at each other and said the Cummins lash is more then Cat. So we rolled the engine and had less then 2/4- 1/000 of an inch wear Nothing! For the same 72k miles Cat would be around the same. We adjusted to spec. The big reason was we really wanted to Inspect. for Wear/Leaks/ Loose Items and bent push rods. Remember 55k the engine is not broke in. At least remove valve cover and with a goos light Inspect! The Procedure is easy and most Shade tree Techs. can do it. We spent more time inspecting the doing the Valve lash Adj. You can get a turning tool from Cummins or Cheat like we did with a socket and ext. with a breaker bar on a Crankshaft damper wheel bolt!
