Would like to be close to zoo and water front. I have never been to San Diego so would like suggestion on things to do.

I know of two on the water in San Diego area. Both are 10-15 mins from the zoo, Balboa Park area.
Campland on the Bay, is on Mission Bay.
Chula Vista RV Park is on San Diego Bay, in Chula Vista.
Between the two, the Chula Vista RV Park is where I would stay. Nothing wrong with Campland, just an older park, without quite as good of layout.
If you don't mind being away from ocean, but still with 20-30 mins from the Zoo area, the KOA in Chula Vista is a nice park. Also the Santee Lakes gets good reviews.
If you stay in one of the Chula Vista RV Parks, also add the Nature Exhibit along the bay front (Foot of E Street, where it dead ends going West) to your visits. It's neat.
You might check RV Parks Reviews for these, and see what you find. If dry camping is ok, the Silver Strand park, is on the ocean. It is nothing but black top - but you are next to the sand of the beaches...
Best of luck,
Smitty
