Went to Brandon, MS to take Son and 2 grandchildren on a spring brake trip. Twice when turning the key on, the start solenoid (the one under the dash on passenger side) clicked but the dash lights did not come on. Has Son turn the key to start while I hit the solenoid with a screw driver and it started. On the way back, stoped at a Love's for fuel. Turned the key on and heard the click but on lights. Hitting the solenoid this time did not work so had to short it out to get it to start. Back in Brandon I took the solenoid out and went with it in hand to the a parts store. Put new one in it did not work. Put in 4new units from 3 different parts stores with no luck. Took the old one apart to see how they work. Cleaned all the contacks, put it back together, installed it and would you believe it started. I did figure a was to bench test it before reinstalling it. Now I would like to have a spare, but test it first. Could not find one made in USA like the old one was. The coach now has 158,000+ miles on it.

Go to NAPA and get ST85 solenoid. It is a continual duty not intermittent like most solenoids. Suspect that is the problem.

Leonard, thanks for the suggestion. I spent 3 frustrating days working on this problem. Will be headed to Colorado this Wednesday.

You may or may not have solved your problem. It's hard to beleive that 3 or 4 new solenoids did not fix it provided they were continuous duty solenoids.
If it occurs again replace the one in the engine compartment if you also have one there. Most of us have two solenoids.

Richard,
The only solenoid that I have seem in the engine compartment is to hook the 2 battery systems together. Will give it a closer look. Thanks for the suggestion.
