55 mph. Avoid California if possible. We do.

Walt, it has been a few years since I was out there with a towed, but trailers (of any kind) were limited to 55 MPH. Makes a real slow trip across the desert, but does give the CHP a way to build revenue. They are everywhere. I suggest they fire half the CHP to save money, and quit irritating the out of state visitors. Yea, like they would listen.
Jack Nichols, 2003 Intrigue, 11527 in Texas where an 85 MPH speed limit is proposed. I drive the coach max of 60 anyway.

In CA the CHP ( lovingly known as the "Chips") says that any towed vehicle is considered the same as a trailer. Trailer speed is limited to 55 MPH max. on highways and interstates and is posted on most highways at regular intervals. Previously, many 18 wheelers would push to 60 MPH. But lately some seem to be backing off to 55. I do not know if it is a fuel economy measure or fear of HUGE fines issued to truckers. Keep in mind that the state is broke so, I would advise you not be the one who unwittingly contributes to their coffers.
I live and drive my coach a lot in CA. I try to watch what the truckers are doing and generally do not pass them except in the mountain uphill climbs.
The up-side is that the slower speed gives me an average of 8 MPG mountain and flat land combined. This is especially important in CA as the cost of fuel is much higher here.
Example: Dsl price $4.24 per gal at Sam's Club, Palm Desert, CA yesterday and this is the lowest price in the Palm Springs area. Nearby Pilot/Flying-J is much higher. Of course, that price will be obsolete by next week! G'luck,

Same as an 18 wheeler, is what I was told when I got a warning 4 years ago. They had a bunch of us pulled over at the bottom of the grade descending into Indio on the Interstate heading west.

California speed limit signs have always posted one limit for automobiles, and the second sign for "Trucks and Autos with Trailers". Many of us have "negotiated" tickets with law enforcement when exceeding these limits with our Country Coaches pulling toads.
California has recognized this problem and has changed the speed limit signs in select areas (north part of state and at state border crossings) to now have one sign for autos, the second sign for trucks, and a third sign for us stating (All Vehicles when Towing). The limit is 55 MPH. Could still be a little room for negotiating since most signs in the state still say "Autos with Trailers". Good luck!

Reply from a retired traffic lieutenant . . . 55 mph max anywhere in CA when towing, and no tow vehicles in carpool lanes.

Isn't it amazing how much smarter I become once I get out of California. With the same thing I can drive 65 or more. Makes one think California has some kind of problem. Nice state to simple stay out of. Take my money to a better state.

If you select "mode" on your shift panel, the transmission will shift into6th at a lower speed.

Be careful if you are over 40' in CA also. Limited roads you can travel on. If you have a 45' and a big tow vehicle you will be over the total length limit on any road.
