Hello all,
We are testing for our Nevada Class B driver's license's and one part of the test is to demonstrate maintenance checks on tire pressure, oil levels, etc. One of the things we must demonstrate is checking the power steering fluid level. Sad to say, I've always relied on our regular engine maintenance sessions to check this fluid level, and while we check the oil, tires, etc before each trip and each day while traveling, I have no idea where or how to check the power steering fluid. I have checked the manual, looked all over the engine, and in lieu of taking it to the shop, can anyone tell me where or how to check the power steering fluid on a Cummins 400 ISL engine? Any help would be appreciated.

On ours, it is all tied together with the hyd fan drive system. Only have the one hyd. oil reservoir to check for the fan and the PS.

You don't state what part of Nevada you are in but I tested in Carson City about 11 years ago. The guy who tested me just asked me to verbally say what thing I would test. I went through the entire "pre flight" while we stood in the shade alongside the motorhome.

Hi Charlotte and Jerry,
I do not know where you are taking the test but I have taken it and that was not asked of me. They barely got into it I think the only thing they ask me is where I check the oil. The driving was the most important and just general questions about the outside of the RV.

On mine it's the black cylinder looking tank in the engine compartment on the passenger side of the engine. This is the hydraulic reservor for the radiator fan and the PS. There is a dip stick on top that is unscrewed to remove it from the tank.

At one of the technical sessions at a CC Factory Rally, they advised us not to check the hydraulic system reservoir. They, the CC techs, are more concerned about introducing dirt into the system by pulling the cap with the dipstick attached to check the fluid level.
Our Magna is 11 years old and I have never checked the hydraulic fluid level. It is checked once a year by our Service Shop. And the filters are changed every other year, along with the fluid.

One rule of thumb- if it don't leak- fluid level should remain the same.
