Downloaded the pdf file for the 42 series step. It states on page 4 to not use WD-40 or silicone lube as they have a tendency to evaporate and dry the mating surfaces which leave them vulnerable to the elements. They say to use a dry lubricant.
What dry lube does one use?

Interested to hear what others may have used. I got in trouble in Moab with the blowing dust. The steps would not go in after setting a week. Dust locked the steps up.

Sounds like the same thing bicycle chain lube does - goes on very runny, firms up to a dry lube.

I use "liquid Wrench" chain lube... comes in a spray can, works great... Is available at Lowe's, Home Depot, etc. for $2.95 per can...
The Kwickee-Lube sold by Kwickee doesn't work any better than the chain lube...

Have tried lots of things. Have not found one I like. Chain lubes to dry or leave a sticky surface. Will have to try Kwik lube. Battery trays are a major problem area as well.

Kwikee makes their own brand. Available at major RV stores.

I've had good luck with a good cleaning (I use electonic spray cleaner). Let it dry, then spray on a film of dri-lube. CRC, Dow 321 and also 3-in-one, are three brands, many others.
Non sticky to attract dirt/dust.
I do a cleaning twice a year, and do a fresh dri-lube spray then, and then once or twice in between.
(Spelled both Dri-Lube and Dry Lube
Has been working well for me, Bounder and now the Allure.

I am pretty sure a graphite lubricant is a dry lubricant. I usually use LPS2, it is a liquid silicone that does not attract dust & grime.

"Graphite and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) are the predominant materials used as solid lubricant. In the form of dry powder these materials are effective lubricant additives due to their lamellar structure."
I concur with you Kevin, that graphite lube will work well too. I use the other, as the graphite can stain clothes when bumped into.
In aerospace, the graphite is used to handle the higher temperatures. Not a factor in our usage.

I have used white lithium grase in an aerosol can on my steps. Available at any auto parts store. Like that claimed for the propiratery Kwikee product, it goes on as a liquid or foam and dries to grease. I've always used on the door locks in my cars as well.
The last time I did the step, I used a spray parafin wax lubricant that I got at Lowe's. As someone else alluded to, cyclists use wax on their chains because it won't pick up dirt and mud easily. However, recently I've read that parafin wax is not a lubricant, so I think I will go back to white lithium aerosol grease.
Lubricants get dirty, so they must be removed and re-applied. For that I use a water-based sodium hydroxide de-greaser like Purple Power.
