Advice please for my gps unit.
Yes, I'm using another GPS unit, and want to pull out the ridiculous large screen unit. I have the back-up camera that slides out from the radio.
1. What can I use the gps screen for?
2. When I pull the gps screen, can I take out the hard drive as well, or does the radio use it?
I have the "on the steering wheel" control that runs both units but I really dislike the gps unit and its antiquated methods and difficulty of use.
Anyone else pulled their unit?

Plus, what year and model coach?
I replaced my flip up in dash combo unit with a double DIN Pioneer a year or two ago. The GPS electronics unit, which was overhead, was broke anyway. The combination audio plus GPS plus rear view camera is OK for the car, but I find it lacking for the Coach.
I think the ideal would be a big Silverleaf display with rear view, plus a music only radio/stereo/CD/iPod/Bluetooth, plus wife that could do the navigation. Alas, I can't replace the wife, so a stand alone GPS or iPad with GPS software, or a netbook PC with GPS software and receiver would all work.
Here is why - The double din combo dash unit is to far away and to small, and has to much glare to make a good GPS. It is difficult to adjust the screen brightness on the go, and you can't adjust the position of the screen at all to avoid glare. It is fine for a rear view camera, and good as a spare, or backup GPS. If you go the iPad plus software route, there may be times when you can't get online to get your maps. If you haven't pre-loaded your route, you could be out of luck.
I would prefer a big silverleaf or a dedicated backup camera, so I can tune the radio without switching the backup monitor off. I like to keep my eye on the toad, and know what is directly behind me at a glance.
Of course all this depends on your dash configuration, and where you might have space to fit things in.
I have one of the new Dezl units from Garmin, but before that I was using my iPhone with MotionX software, as I like it much better than the GPS in the Pioneer. In fact, I like the iPhone better than the Garmin in some respects, except when the phone is ringing, especially in town...
Not sure I trust the wife's taste in music either, or I would turn the radio over to her.

When we acquired our 2007 Allure it had the in-dash screen that was a component of the dash radio system. I believe it is a Pioneer AVH 5700 model. The unit had all the features and options except the GPS add on. The screen also provides the rear camera display.
I began searching for a GPS unit for the 5700 but they were seldom available new and when I found one, the price exceeded $1000, nearly as much as a totally new unit less installation costs.
Garmin's Model 53 ( https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134&pID=10573 (https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134&pID=10573) ) seemed to be the best solution. The beauty of this unit is that it provides all the best features Garmin has in their GPS sets in a compact box that can be mounted anywhere. It is easily updated and has audio/video outputs that feed into the dash mounted Pioneer. This is a far better GPS than we would have had if the Pioneer feature had been installed.
The Garmin 53 comes with a small RF remote that is easily operated. I velcro'd one to the center of the steering wheel ( I know, tacky but very convenient and removable ) and bought a second that my wife can use in the passenger seat.
The GPS has priority on the display to everything except the back up camera view. The Pioneer displays the GPS video even when listening to XM, a CD or AM/FM. If I am changing something on the audio while traveling, the screen shows the audio and then reverts to GPS.
Secondarily, I connected the output of the Garmin to the television circuit which allows the GPS to be seen and heard on either front or rear television. The television is set to an auxiliary input. We don't often use this unless the grandkids are along and want to keep current on where we are and travel status.
We have a Garmin Model 885 that we use in the toad. Mostly for security, I bring it into the coach when traveling. My wife uses it for secondary purposes such as locating rest areas, restaurants or whatever without disrupting the primary GPS. ( the kids have Play Stations, Wii and whatever...this is about as complex as we get any more in our generation) The only problem was that once at a proverbial fork in the road they each suggested a different route. The problem was that I had the coach unit configured on the "bus" setting and the toad unit simply as "automobile". Luckily I guessed right that time and missed a route that would have been difficult for a coach.
Mounting the Garmin 53 was simple. We installed it behind and above the front television through a panel on the right hand side which was accessed by removing several phillips screws. It has great sensitivity and satellite signal strength without an external antenna with the signal coming through the fiberglass cap. We routed the 12 VDC wire and two RCA cables inside the left front windshield frame cover. The whole installation took maybe an hour and is invisible.

Radio model # AVH-P6400CD + 12 disk CDX-P1280 GPS AVD-W6210 + DVD Navigation Unit
My gps is not in the dash, but on a pedestal. The hard drive that goes with it is mounted inside a cupboard. My plan wold be to eliminate the gps and hard drive but leave the radio with back-up camera unless there was something else I could use the gps screen for. Suggestions?

Great Post. Thanks much. Our Pioneer navigation component has never worked because it won't eject the disk that must be in there (?) so we can put the one in that it insists it needs. Never worked. Sent it to them for repair. More than $500 later (that was just the deductible), it would not eject the disk.... Gave up. Everything else works - Backup camera, XM, etc.

If you can live with the limitation that CD's or DVD's can't be played in your unit then you could still do what I did with a Garmin 53. When we want to play a CD that is done through our DVD/CD surround system anyway. I don't recall when we used the Pioneer CD player last.

We have exactly the same problem with our Pioneer GPS - seems to like the CD and it won't give it up, can't get it out. So now, our rearview display has a banner on the bottom that says
