My question, do I have a defective fan controller. At operating temperature the engine temp fluctuates between 182 and 198 degrees. When the temp is up to 198 it starts to come down fairly quick, and then slowly back up to 198. Is this normal , or should the temp stay fairly even. Maybe some one with knowledge on this subject can help me.
Thanks Dick.

Sounds about right. Mine runs between 185-195. When my fan controller went bad, it never got above 182 since the fan was running continuously at high speed.

My coach was staying at 185 except on long grades. The mileage went down to 5 1/2mpg. I had Colton Truck troubleshoot the system. They replaced the controller. It now stays between 198 & 203. I just went from Ely, NV to Brigham City, UT and got 8.8 mpg. By the time my trip is over the increase in mileage will have almost paid for the controller!!

Thanks for the post, John. I'd be grateful to know if you had an ECM put in or is it some other kind of controller system? I'd sure be happy with an increase in mpg!

All I know is, it was the fan controller. He said if I ever had trouble with overheating, the controller is at the bottom of the radiator and to just unplug the wiring to it and it will default to high fan (lousy mileage again). So far all is well.
