I have a very good friend who is in the heavy equipment business. He abjures Cummins engines whenever possible, and his stated reason is that in his experience the low-end torque on the Cummins is much worse than on the CAT.

I have no experience with CAT engines, but I do notice that my Cummins 370 actually accelerates more quickly in 4th through 6th gear than it does in 1st or 2nd. This is only anecdotal information, however.
