Title: Insurance costs

I've just received our invoice for the next 12 months insurance on our coach. I'm amazed, no make that shocked, at the increase in the cost. It has jumped 18.5% while, like all of our coaches, the value of the coach has plumeted.
Never had a claim. I just pay the invoices yet for no apparent reason price still go up. (The past 5 years I have had decreases as well as increases but not to this extent).
I'm interested to know what everyone's invoices are like. Are they going down? Going up? Or staying the same?

Thanks.

It would be helpful if you stated the company you are with so we'd know who the comparisons are with. Thanks in advance,

Bruce You may want to look at the value they have listed for your coach. Quite often, if you don't bring it up , the insurance companies will keep using the value you gave them when you bought the coach, even though they would not pay that amount , if you have a total loss. You should look at using an " agreed value " set between you and the insurance company. This is the value you would get in the case of a total loss. I do this every year, when my bill comes up. There is no sense in paying for more coverage , than they will give you , if you have a total loss. The agents rarely bring this up , since they are paid a commission on the premium. The higher the premium , the higher the commission. As well, they like to talk you out of this approach. Good luck !

Hi Bruce,

Just in case it makes you feel any better

Our recent renewal over here in the UK - jumped just shy of 36% !!
Tried everything possible to get our insurers to reconsider / reduce, without success
Latest rumour is that present insurers may be trying to exit the RV market - the market over here is restricted enough over here as it is, many insurers will not touch the larger RV
Looks like insurance robbery isn't only confined to the UK / this side of the pond :-)

I don't mind sharing with a little history added: (and we're both '01 Intrigues)

2006 $1,212

2007 1,272 + 4.9%
2008 1,468 +15.4%
2009 1,652 +12.5%
2010 Same
2011 Same

Hope this helps.

We had Progressive and it jumped the same way. No reason. We switched to National Interstate Insurance. Minimal increases since then.

Bruce,

Progressive REDUCED our "fulltimer" premium about 18.5% for the next year - lowest its been since 2007. Just last year they RAISED it about 14%!
Never have been able to figure out why it jumps up and down from year to year.

OK here's the deal.

First we are Australians driving on Australian licenses. So only one or two insurers will give us cover. (Had a Texas licnese but they now require a SSN and non residents can't get one).
Now having said that Progressive has a policy of after 3 year the rate will drop back to 'standard' rates. (We also have a toad insured with Progressive. No issues with that premium). I do all my quotes/payments via the web.
Now I first had a policy with Progressive, for m/h and car, way back in 1997. For a few years between 2001 and 2006 I had no vehicles, in the USA, to insure so no policy records. But the last 5 years I have been with Progressive.
Year 1 premium was $1897. Then $2099. Then $2380. Then $2737. Then $3244. Now you see the issue? (By the way we relise insurance in the USA is WAY over what the rest of the world pays. Especially here in Australia. eg we had a $300,000+ coach that cost just A$1900 a year to insure).
Don't get me wrong. I realise I'm the odd one out here but and expect the premiums to increase but not by this amount and not considering that we are now well past our 3 year trial period.
I would love a decrease for sure but I'm more interested in if our increase is in line with what everyone else is experiencing.

Thanks for the feedback.

Bruce

You might try a call to Miller Insurance 503-636-6347, they specialize in RV Insurance and mine is one third what yours is.
The cost of a call will get you a quote, then you decide.

OK, we've got a 1998 CC Prevost 40'XL, bought new. For many years it was with Miller and it got VERY expensive so about 5 years ago my local, ERIE INSURANCE agent suggeste4d we try to use Erie again. When it was new in 1998 they would not touch it due to the value I had placed on it new, over $600K. Now many years later when you find that the value has lowered greatly, we switched. We have an agreed value with Erie of $250K for a total loss. Hey, be realistic, they're not going to give me $600K when they can buy used today for $250K. Property damage $100M, Bodily Injury $1000M, Comp & Collision deductible $1M. We get discounts for ABS, alarm system, driver training. Last year it was $691 and now for this year its up 6.2% to $734. Our agent combines all our policies which are all Erie and this qualifies for some discounting also. And by combining policies we "stack" our liability coverages. Can't be done when you have separate brand policies for autos, m-home, house.

Another to try is Overland Insurance. Country Coach International (CCI) members report good experiences with them. You can find information about them on the CCI website, and they give CCI members a discount . . .a quick way to make back your membership fee.
