Title: LED CEILING LIGHT REPLACEMENT EXPERIENCE?

HI everyone,

Does anyone have experience with replacing the ceiling halogen 12v 10w bulbs with the LED lights offered by "Prudentrver.com"
If you have replaced your halogen bulbs are you satisfied with the LED's ? I am tired of the hot lights melting the plastic covers and am concerned about the fire hazard. I heard someone had a fire.

comments?
Thanks,

I've replaced all 32 of my puck lights with the G4-WHP-15DAC lamps from Superbrightleds.
http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/index.cgi?action=DispPage&category=MR16&Page2Disp=%2Fspecs%2FG4-WHP15-DAC.htm (http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/index.cgi?action=DispPage&category=MR16&Page2Disp=%2Fspecs%2FG4-WHP15-DAC.htm)
I used the warm white leds and am very satisfied with them. The reflectors need to be removed from the fixtures and the pins on the lamps will need to be bent slightly to fit into the socket. Be careful bending the pins so that they are not bent right at the solder joint where they are attached to the board.
The biggest hurdle I had to get over was the cost. At $16.95 it is tough to choke down that much money for replacement bulbs but I can turn all 32 of my ceiling lights on and only pull about 6.5 amps out of my batteries which is less than the current consumed by the 10 lights that come on in the galley area when I turn on the one switch that controls them. I've comforted myself about the expense by thinking of the much lower current draw on my batteries when boondocking; and of course, the heat is much less.

Hi Rosemary,

We used Marine Beam Lighting (www.marinebeam.com), as the source for our LED lighting. Jeff Field (864.275.7837) helped me get my order straight as to the kind of light, intensity, etc. These guys are very easy to work with and prices were better than most places we tried.

I'll always try these guys first to see if they have what I need.

I have noticed that the RV light bulb replacement LED's have not changed , since they were introduced about 5 years ago. The price of other things like flashlights with LED's have come down a lot and are more powerful. The latest price at Costco for a Superbright LED flashlight, that compare in power( light ) to a regular flashlight, were just over 6$ each and that included , the batteries and a machined aluminum body. At 16.95$ each for just the bulb, is ridiculous. I am not criticizing someones choice, if that is what they choose, but the cost to run the generator, to get the payback , would be years. I have looked at most websites that I can find, but that 16.95$ price is probably the lowest. I will not change to LED , even though, I think it makes great sense, at those astronomical prices. I would hope that as Forum Members , find the lower prices, that they would post them, for the rest to see.

Ron,

I agree the prices seem really unreasonable. I do hope someone has found better prices. I cannot afford to replace all of my lights.I am mostly concerned with those I use most frequently, because of the heat generated. I am having to purchase more of the round bezels to cover the lights. I heard someone had a coach fire started by these lights and I am not surprised.
I will wait and see all the sources people recommend and I will be replacing only those I must at this time. I will be comparing prices and coach owners advice and experience.
Thanks for your input. and everyone else's at this point. I hope more people tell their experiences and have good sources with less expensive lights.

Thanks for your reply. How did you remove the reflectors to make room for the disc led's? Did you have to completely remove each fixture and break them off?

Thanks,

Hi back to you. We changed our all halogen lighting to LED at the last CC rally in Oregon several years ago. PrudentRV was the company that supplied the bulbs.

When we lived in a house the electric cook top was halogen. Unlike other electric cook tops that are slow to heat, and never reach a high degree of heat, the heat from the halogen cook top was intense and instantaneous. Imagine our horror when we discovered that our coach lighting used the same system to light the coach that we cooked on for years in our home.

Yes, it was very expensive, but the heat from the halogen bulbs was so intense we could barely use our lights. The lights are not as bright, that is true But now, we don't panic if we forget to turn off a light when we leave the coach. Nor do we refrain from using the lights during the summer. We do need to turn on the furnace in the winter for heat though. We are happier with the LED, even though the light per bulb is not as bright. Turning on every light in the coach uses less watts than one set of halogen lights.

Yes. we would do it all again.

Did you have to remove the reflectors from the light fixture? If so, how did you do it? I have no clue.

Rosemary,

We've used the superbright LEDs in some of our overhead lighting (about six lights in all). They are a round disc design that replaces the 10w two pin halogens. There are a couple of issues for us. 1) The light spectrum is very cold and that may bother some. 2) LEDs have no filament and thus no thermal inertia. This has implications for dimmer circuits only. When lights are dimmed, power is switch on and off rapidly to reduce the average power supplied to the light. Less "average" power causes the light to dim. For incandescent bulbs the filament stays hot during the short time the power has been switched off. This heat smooths out the bursts much the same way the retention in your eye connects the frames of a motion picture. With LEDs light is instantaneous and there is a noticeable high frequency flicker which is annoying after a while. At least as controlled by our dimmer system. I'd gather improvement have been made to LED lighting over the years. Expect those improvements to hit the smallest markets last or not at all. Hope this helps.

Hi Pete

How did you get the reflectors off of the light fixtures. We tried to replace the halogens and could not move the reflector on our ceiling lights. So, I tried to buy new light fixtures that the LED bulbs would work with and, of course, the screw holes would not line up. Figures.
Also has anyone had any luck finding LED bulbs for the halogen fixtures where the bulbs have to be inserted straight up rather than side ways.

You may want to take a look on Ebay at these, 10x Brand New G4 21 led Light Bulbs Lamp Warm White Marine RV Camper Boat DC 12V, I used some of these and have had good service from them.., of course they come from China, but don't the others also? I did find some with the vertical pins but they were too short to reach the connector, have not bothered with them lately. If anyone finds the vertical pins that are long enough to work please let me know..

I din't remove the reflectors, Rosemary, just plugged the lights in. Some of the lights were side mounts, some bottom mounts. Since I wasn't clear as to which light would fit a socket or just how bright I needed, Jeff sent me several to try, which was a big help. I also emailed photos of the sockets and mounts (he is a patient man...).

Hi Everyone

If you are trying to find LED that fit the G-4 type bulbs that plug straight in you can find them at PrudentRver.com.
They carry both the ones that plug straight in and the ones that lay flat.

I stopped at Lowes, yesterday and they were out of the G4 replacement LED bulb which sells for 8.98$. I got a data sheet from them and the LED bulbs are made by ARRAY. It is listed under www.arraylighting.com. We now have to find out where else we can buy this . Typically Lowes and Home Depot would have pretty high mark-ups on this sort of item. If anyone can find where to buy , please advise.

I guess I should have done my homework before my last post. I found on at Amazon .com an LED bulb by Scintiluna ( who only appear to sell on E-Bay and Amazon), a G4 led for 8.99$ that is 31.5 MM round ( 1 1/4 inches ) and it provides 140 Lumens compared to the unit at Lowes which is 67 lumens and it is in Warm White. I can't get to the coach till after the new year, but this appears to be a better fit than the rectangular unit from Lowes. If anyone deides to buy before mid January, I would like to hear back. Hi All - Not intended as thread hijack!!!
I've been watching this thread, trying to determine LED replacement bulb opportunities - and I sure like lower costs if possible:)!
My question is 'which lights' are we talking about, admit I get a big confused (more so recently).

Our 04 Allure has:

-Large ceiling florescent bulbs (Assume no LED for these?) -Wall sconces with two pin bulbs (I think the same bulbs are in the vanity light above the bathroom sink.) -Under cabinet small lights, what I call puck lights, with bright halogen bulbs.
Please confirm, the G4 LED bulbs are the replacement for the 2pin bulbs we have in the sconces and probably vanity light? Or, are these the puck light bulb replacements?
Appreciate any high level summary from those that have been down this road before...

Best to all - may the light be with you!! Smitty

Though I don't have dimmers, has anyone tried the G4 LED replacements on circuits with dimmers? Did you see flickering? At the last FMCA we attended there were LED replacements for the Florescent tubes, but it required the owner to remove the ballast? Any one succeeded in installing the LED tubes? If you have installed LEDs which coor temperature did you use and were happy with the results? TWI 2004 intrigue 11731

Smitty The G4 LED bulb we are referring to are for the puck lights or the almost flush soffitt lights. There are many conversions , to other varieties of these bulbs, but the biggest use is in the bottom side of the cabinets. They had a huge variety of choice onthe Amazon site . Just enter G4 LED bulbs and you will see tha many pages of choices

With so many of us interested in the LED replacements, I was wondering if we could get a group order together and, by ordering several hundred, get a better price for them. We could use express mail to send out to the individuals and decrease the shipping costs significantly. I am also looking into my contacts to determine if I know of a lighting contractor or general contractor that could get a volume discount and eliminate the second party markups,

Roger The idea to get a big order and reduce the price is good , but I can't see how it would be accomplished. If someone, such as , Kevin Waite, would be able to buy the LED's, then, maybe it could be done. I could easily use 20 to 30 of the ones, I suggested, at 143 Lumens. Someone has to confirm that they work ( fit ) and if they could be dimmed , with no problem, then I would consider the purchase. Maybe , you have an idea , how it could be done, but it's really , not as simple as you say.

OK, now I'm really confused. The "G-4" lights I find are the two pin bulbs that go into the wall sconces(living room/bedroom) or the vanity lights in the bathroom. The bulbs under the cabinets are 1139IF's that fit the swivel spot lights. I'm not sure what the so called "Puck lights" are or how they are used. Until the last description, I would have thought "Puck lights" were the small flush mounted lights with a stainless surround in the ceiling. Is there that much difference in our coaches?

The G4 designation is for the 2-pin arrangement that is about 1/8 inch apart. Normally these come in quartz and/or halogen , which is the bulb about 1/2 inch long. There are many uses for these bulbs , and normally come in 10 or 20 watt sizes. The LED conversion , in the post I gave , showed the diameter of the "bulb" to be 1 1/4 inches. These will fit in the "puck " or recessed or semi recessed fixtures. Since there is no exact cross reference i assume that the 67 lumens ( I assume 10 watt equivalent ) from Lowes, which is a rectangular, array of 9 or 12 LED's. The units from Ebay , I gave were 140 lumens ( I assume 20 watt equivalent ), for about the same price , so were a better choice for our applications ( round and brighter ). Either of these LED's probably draw a watt or less, and obviously run very cool. If you dry camp a lot , or are worried about the heat from the halogen bulbs, then these are a better choice. Within 5 years virtually all " bulbs " will be LED's. An interesting bit of information on LED's that are used in traffic lights , have presented a problem, in that, when you get snow and freezing rain, there is not enough heat given off to melt the snow or ice. With the old bulbs , this was never a problem, The other big advantage of LED's is that they last, probably 10 to 15 years.
I hope I have answered your questions

I have been experimenting with different LED replacements for the G4 ceiling lights and I think I have the best solution I have heard of. Amazon has a vendor called Scintiluna that has a warm white disk type LED that fits the shallow type puck lights in my coach. They are 140 lumen and slightly brighter and whiter than the G4 halogens. The advertised price on Amazon is $8.99 ea but I have contacted Scitiluna and for orders of 20 or more they will offer a 25% discount and free shipping. Use the promo code of WP2DPP78 to get this offer. The item is listed as G4 Base LED Lamp - Side Pin, Warm White 140 Lumen by Scintiluna. Here is a link. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0043SG522/ref=oh_o04_s00_i00_details (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0043SG522/ref=oh_o04_s00_i00_details)
My coach also has recessed G4 lights under the cabinets that will not accommodate this particular LED bulb, I have inquired to Scintiluna about a bulb for this fixture that Is also G4 warm white but is 180 lumen which I think would be even better that they have given me the dimensions for. Once I am able to verify that this LED bulb will work, I will let everyone know. I hope this helps all of you who have struggled over this whole halogen to LED replacement question.
I am also looking for some help. I am replacing the home theater in my coach and would also like to run wires from the cabinet to the storage basement compartment behind the front wheels on the passenger side which is below this media cabinet. Has anyone with a 2006 Intrigue or similar coach done this and could offer some guidance on how to rune these wire? Thanks in advance

Hi Ron,

On the lights I was referring to I have no dimmer so I cannot answer this. You may want to contact the vendor. The only lights on my coach that are controlled by a dimmer are 4 sconce lights in the living area and 2 more in the bedroom.

When you replace the halogen bulb with the LED are eliminating the reflector glass?

No Dan, I have only installed 4 of the disk led's so far and the only minor issue I ran into was that I had to bend one of the electrical components on the disk towards the middle of the disk since it was bent towards the pin side if the disk. Other than that 1 it was just a matter of removing the old bulb and installing the new led disk bulb.

I ordered and received the LED replacement bulbs for the G 4 bulbs from China at a cost of about $2.00 each. The ones I received fit correctly and were bright enough, but their "warm white"? was too yellow for me. They said I want the "pure white"? bulbs, so I have returned them and am waiting for them to receive the returned bulbs and send the "pure white"? ones to me. Look on eBay under electronics and G4 LED lights sold by "gogo.buy. These are what I purchased : 10pcs G4 24-3528 SMD LED Pure white Light.
They were easy to put in as long as you are careful not to drop and break the 2 1/8"? glass covers of the lights in the ceiling. Can someone tell me where to buy several replacement glass covers? I ordered 70 bulbs to be sure I had enough (they come in packs of 10 bulbs). I was surprised at the number of lights in this coach.

Jan,

The original bulbs are Halogen and it is those that you have to take care not to touch the glass part of the bulb with your fingers. The oil in you skin is transferred to the bulb and causes early failures.
The thread here is a discussion about replacing the Halogen 10 watt bulbs with LED bulbs. They use about 80% less power and consequentially produce far less heat. Many of the newer high end coaches have lots of these Halogen 10 watt fixtures in the ceiling and it produces an uncomfortable amount of heat near the ceiling. Replacing the Halogens with LED bulbs solves this problem except that LED lights are usually very expensive. They also however are very long lasting.
The trick is finding replacements that will fit into the light fixture with a minimal amount of revamping. Also LED lights tend to have a more harsh and brighter appearance that is not to everyone's liking. Like florescent lights they come in temperature ratings which provide some idea of how stark white the bulb is. Although the pet names for this difference tends to vary with location and manufacturer, the thermal rating, if provided, can tell you al lot about what you buying if you understand what it means. That alone is a challenge and I haven't mastered it yet by any means. If there was ever a subject that badly needs a naming standard this is one.
Many group members have spent a considerable amount of time investigating the subject. I feel their pain as I don't like the ceiling heat pumps because they push heat down on your head while your feet are cold. It is also a problem with lighting during warm days which is what a lot of us are looking for.

Jan,

There is no problem handling the LED bulbs. The halogen bulbs may be caused to pop from the oils from your fingers. All you need to do is wipe them clean before applying power to them.

Gene

I have not been able to locate a source for just the glass reflector. I have also broken a few. The other issue I have is breaking the plastic tips that hold the reflector. Probably a combination of age, heat from the bulb and clumsiness. I was able to purchase the complete light from Guaranty in Junction City last year for about $10 each but when I called last week they no longer had any in stock. Country coach quoted me $39 each for the complete fixture which is why I am exploring LED's.
When my friends were converting to LED's in Quartzite last year they were replacing the complete fixture and I picked up a half dozen fixtures and lens that they were swapping out. I didn't pay a lot of attention to the brand because I did not like the white light. The discussion here is centered on just replacing the bulb but then you need a good fixture and lens.

Following with interest.

After some discussion with Drew, I ordered 26 of the LED bulbs from Amazon using the link and promo code that Drew provided. I received my bulbs yesterday and installed them this morning -- LOVE THEM! As Drew mentioned, they are whiter and brighter than the halogen bulbs. Now when I turn on the lights, it actually increases the amount of light in the coach (even in the daytime). If there was one thing that I was disappointed in with my coach, it was the amount of light - NOW I really have light. My biggest problem now is that I am going to have to change out the bulbs in the wall mount style fixtures.
There were no modifications required for the lights - remove the trim ring, remove the glass, remove the halogen bulb, install the LED bulb, install the glass and trim ring - move to the next light.
Thanks so much to Drew for researching, testing, obtaining, and providing the information on the source and the discounts.

Are these LED's dimmable. I tried some LED bulbs and they wouldn't dim.

Google G-4 LED lights and you will get a numerous hits. Many of these links are very informative and I have seen discussion regarding whether their specific LED is dimmable and some ways to make those not function with dimmer switches. There is also discussion regarding LED taillights and the potential problems and solutions for the flasher unit.

I talked to a rep at www.kaperii.com and the have both the led fixtures and the G-4 replacement leds and he said that all of their leds are dimmable.
They also carry both fixtures and bulbs in the cool white and warm white colors.

Thanks. I think I will order 50 or so. It should drastically cut down on the heat that those halogen bulbs put out.
