I would like to replace my current Satellite System for one that will receive HD.

Is a Dome as Good as a Dish ?

What brand/model would you recommend ?

A dome can't equal a dish. The size of the reflector is much smaller reducing the amount of collectivity necessary to acquire a strong enough signal and the dome further attenuates the signal. What does this mean, well the further North you go the signal gets weaker and if there's overcast the signal strength is reduced even more making reception marginal with a normal size dish, let alone with a small dish hidden under a cover..

Do you plan to use Dish Network or Direct TV? Direct TV requires a special LNB to receive HD, which is not available in a dome.

I just replaced mine with a Motosat HD dish and am extremely pleased with it; no dome anymore for me,

Stan, I have the Motosat "HD-SL5" using Direct TV, love it, as with any tilt-up Dish, just be sensitive to super high winds.

I was a Motosat guy until I started reading about all the problems with the Moto HD setup. Seems that the software has to be upgraded on a regular basis.
I went with a Winegard Traveler which does the software upgrages automatically soI don't have to fool with it.

Winegard is also cheaper than a Moto.

Bill,

I think you need to rethink your statement Stan is asking about Satellite Systems so apples and oranges rule apply. Of course over the air systems work with any antenna if you have a digital receiver in the TV or separate digital receiver connected to TV analog receiver.
However you need both sat system and receiver capable of HD for system to work! I am not aware of a dome system that is HD capable. I have a Winegard Traveler and Direct TV that work very well.

Bill,

I have a 2004 Monosat that and a reg. Direct TV Receiver. I just leased a Direct TV receiver. I talked to Windegard and they indicted I needed a new dish.

A"Satelite Dish" is an antenna and all of them receive HD signal. Dish requires the 211K reciever be used with the Dome. If Stan has a 300 series (Single LNB) antenna then he can easily install the 500 series dish and dual LNB to his existing system. This is for Dish Network. Direct TV requires the antenna with 3 LNBs which are spaced differently than a Dish Network 3 LNB
You are correct that no dome antenna system works with Direct TV HD as they require 2 LNBs

Bill,

You are correct any dish can accept HD but the old systems controllers will not point the dish to the HD satellites and most horns will not accept multiple LNBs. He will need a new satellite dish or dome to go with his new receiver. My system has 2 HD DVR receivers so I require 4 coax lines from dish to the receivers.

Stan, here is what I know. We had a Kingdome for 5 years. Hated it. Last week we upgraded to HD and chose the Winegard 3005. So very happy now. Easy operation, installation fairly simple etc. Lots of goos reviews about the product.
Motostat is good but more expensive. I bought my Winmegard from amazon, $1432 including s/h.
As a side note. I had friends who traveled to alaska last year. Those with domes got no reception. Motostats got some reception but those with Winegard received good reception throughout the trip.
So far, we are very very happy. I would never own another dome, HD or not.

Another issue is repair service. There are a number of MotoSat repair guys around but it is my understanding that Wingards must be returned to the factory for service.

Have been very happy with my 3 year old MotoSat and the newer ones with GPS are very cool.
