Just wondering if anyone has experienced a 50 amp power failure while 30 amp service works fine. This problem began "occasionally at different RV parks" over the past year or so. Everything works fine while hooked up to 30amp power, but now 50 amp trips off as soon as the surge guard identifies power. Has my surge guard gone bad?

Dennis:

Sounds like you may have a bad surge guard or one of the legs inside your surge guard is bad.

You could also be having issues with you Transfer Switch as well.

It could also be your shoreline reel.

I suspect a bad surge protector, which is a "Surge Guard Auto Power HW-RV50" with an over/under voltage bypass key.
I am contemplating turning the bypass key to the off position to test but not sure what that would tell me if it still failed to provide power.
BTW I am getting 122 volts at each leg of the coach end of the 50 amp cord.

Thanks for the replies

Also, I do hear the transfer switch "thump" when power is identified, but now get an immediate second thump which disconnects power. So I suspect the transfer switch is working.

Disconnect the rig from shore power, shut off the generator, then open the Transfer Switch box. Use an insulated handled screwdriver to tighten the lug screws inside the transfer switch.

Just did that myself and stopped a similar problem.
