I am the original owner of a 2005 Inspire. I have had surging problems from the very first day of ownership. Cat. put me off for a whole year telling me that the issue is being resolved. I have had what they call a new chip or re-flashing three times. The surging never really went away, but I just accepted it. Currently I have about 88,000 miles on the Cat 9 Engine. The surging is once again becoming much more frequent and pronounced.
Am I still under warranty ?
Has anyone else had this issue and had it resolved ?
Will Cat be at the Phoenix Rally in March to address this issue ?
Any other comments would be appreciated.

Stan - can you explain in more detail whats happening? Reason being I am wondering if this is an issue with my C9 also -- I call it more of a "grabbing" feeling, a jerkiness in acceleration?? thanks

Stan, I can't speak to the Cat software methods but I can give you a tip from several of my Cummins friends regarding surging and wild vibration of the entire coach after having their ECM software updated.
Cummins refers to settings as Features & Parameters, on my ISL 370 their about 120 settings if any of these settings are not correct and specific to the particular engine/transmission and coach intended it can result in performance issues.
Since you've had this issue from the very beginning makes me think one or more Features/Parameters were not accurately set to begin with.
I would suggest calling Cat Corporate and asking to speak to a Supervisor of Tech Services and try to get to the bottom of your problem.
Thanks, Mike 03 Allure 1st Ave. #38098 - 370 ISL

Stan,
We also have an 05 Inspire that had problems in the beginning. Don't know if it is the same as yours. We ended up with all new injectors. If you would like to discuss it with me give me a call @ 360-815-2810.

Larry,
I also have had all new injectors and it did not solve the problem. When you replaced the injectors did that solve the problem ?

The new injectors fixed our problem...about 5 years ago. Maybe we didn't have the same problem.

Ken here retired Cat service Tech, Working on C-9's back in 2008 I remember the surging Issue at no load! On our gensets with the C-9 engine is tough when paralleling two or more. Please keep us posted on findings. If I were still working I woild run this by Cat. Engr. All Cat dealers have in house tech support for the techs. I know there are software updates issued monthly. The Tech can go online to Cat with model and S/N and check out. Does the surging go away with load? Have you ever had the coach Dynoed? Ken 99 Allure 30356

To all, from my best Caterpillar Corp contact Brett Wolfe -
There is new software out 314-1065 that can be installed that addresses:
Low Boost
Studder Stumble
Idle Hunting
Transmission not responding
Black smoke
I would try this first. Then go from there. Customer has to go to a certified shop.

Lee -- will there be a CAT tech rep at the rally? If not, is Lazy Days RV a certified CAT servicing place? Knowing nothing about these engines, etc., I was not aware there were software updates that could improve difficulties such as what I experience, and what a few others are experiencing, from their CAT's.
Since Tucson is my first stop on my spring/summer travels, would so love to get this issue resolved while at the rally...... thanking you, Lee...

Hi Jan,
Yes I think there will be a CAT Tech at the rally you can talk to. That person could not do the software update on the spot but should be able to direct you the the closest facility, which I believe is in or nearby Tucson. I do not think Lazydays is a certified center.
I'd bet there is one close to where you live. Remember, if you are a member of the CAT RV Club you get a 10% discount on all CAT Parts.

I also have a few issues with stumbling, not bad, just a pain. Under CAT's warranty I had this motor flashed a number of times. Now that it's a year out of warranty, what can I expect to pay for this "magic flash" 314-1065? Is this something that CAT will do to help its customers issues? Yes, unlikely, but worth asking.

I thought it was 5 years 200,000 miles for CAT with free towing, . Cummins was 5 years, free towing first two years, 100,000 miles. For sure you are out of warranty, un less you have documented proof of the issue and failure of a local shop to correct the issue, before the expiration date. And even then they might only give you an extra small period of grace. Now if the issue is wide spread you may have some cause for hope.
