Title: VCR "swapout"...2000 Allure
Post by: Rvman4u on August 09, 2003, 02:56:28 pm

My Allure came with a VCR in its entertainment center. Im wanting to swap this out for ( if I can do it) a DVD/VHS tape combo.

Anyone done this yet? If so how about a make and model of the equipment you used.

Much appreciated,

Sully

I swapped my VHS with a GO.VIDEO DVD/VHS combo made by Sonic Blue from Costco. Also seen them at Radio Shack. Works great.

As with anything else ... I strongly recommend checking Consumer Reports for their latest DVD/VHS comparison test. Your library should have back issues.

Thanks for the info Barry. Was the swapout as easy to do as appearances would lead one to believe...or was the some hidden "snap" you ran into?

Hi Sully
Very easy.
Unplug the coax on the VHS & plug it into the new unit. Plug the new unit into the power recepticle. On the Antenna switch box, use the same settings as you did for VHS. Because it is a combo unit, The TV will show either the DVD or VHS whichever one you have the movie playing in. Just think of it as if you replacing it with another VHS, & wire it the same way.
I would'nt do without it.
An inexpensive upgrade.

Barry,

I also want to do the same thing. However, when I look for the replacement units they are all too wide for the cabinet. Did you replace your's in a 2000 Country Coah Allure as well? If so, did you have to make any modifications to the cabinet? Or, was the unit the exact same size?

I earlier suggested checking *Consumer Reports* back issues for VCR/DVD combo comparison tests. I just checked and the latest survey is in the Dec '02 issue, which should be in local libraries.

I installed a DVD in a 2000 Allure just this past May.
I was unable to find a DVD/VCR combo that was narrow enough to fit in the cabinet. I purchased a stand alone compact DVD player.

I rearranged the VCR cabinet so the antenna power switch was placed horizontally beside the input/output selector box. I then installed a shelf for the DVD above the selector box and antenna switch. I had to do some cutting, fitting, and painting to the black plywood front panel, but no big deal.

I connected the DVD to the input/output selector's auxillary input cuz I don't do the satellite thing. I also installed an RF modulator so you can watch the DVD in the bedroom. I realize this causes the loss of all the high fidelity, but my co-pilot wants to be able to watch movies in back. With the RF modulator, you could also connect the DVD to the aux input on the VCR.
I then pulled the TV out and installed a second duplex outlet behind the TV to power the DVD and the RF modulator.

Took most of a weekend but looks and works fine.

Brian: Sounds like a plan!! I think I'll addd a splitter to that
AUX port so that maybe someday I CAN drag my SAT stuff with me and use it along my wanderings. Thanks!

I was thinking that CR's comparison test would give the DVD/VCR dimensions, but I just checked the Dec '02 issue and no dimensions are given :-(

If you're referring to the Go-Video DVR4250, CR's notes on that product say, "A good, basic player. 3-mo warranty. DVD: Failed to play DVD+R and DVD+RW discs."

That may make a difference to some.

Barry,

The VHS VCR currently in my cabinet is a Panasonic PV-9400. Based on the spec sheet in the book, the deminsions on it are:

W - 14-15/16" (12.94")
H - 3-2/3" (3.67")
D - 12-3/16" (12.19")

I looked up the GOVideo model number DV3130 and the spec sheet for it lists deminisions:

W - 16.9"
H - 3.7"
D - 10.6"

Are you saying the GOVideo model DV3130 is the one you installed in place of the VCR? What modifications did you make? The DV3130 is 1- 1/2" to 2" wider than the cabinet face opening.

I have the DVR 4400.
It is not in a CC.
There was enough room in my HR Endeavor where the VCR was.. Originally I was responding to the use of the product.
