For those interested parties: As mentioned in previous posts, I switched to the thermal wax valve from Scott Zimmer and now have about 2000miles of travel with it. I could not be happier. My temps run 187-199 and occasionally 201-207 on some tough hills with ambient temps in the 90s all along the way. Fuel mileage went from 7.6 to an average near 9. What more can you ask? Jim, Larry,

Here is a brief synopsis: The thermal wax valve controller replaces everything associated with the Saur DanFoss controller. The box, the six pin connector, the two pin connector, the 7amp fuse, etc. but not the fan or fan drive. Simple installation. The valve attaches to the coolant elbow that feeds the top of the engine block via a fitting that is welded onto the elbow after drilling a 5/8 inch hole in the elbow. The valve has two hydraulic hoses; a pressure line and a tank line. Simply detach two hoses from the SD controller and join them to the two hoses from the wax valve. You are now done except for cleaning up the mess from spilled coolant. Scott Zimmer is the man to talk to and I think you will find his number by searching his name on this forum. Sorry, I am on the road in Twin Falls, ID and I don't have his info with me. Maybe someone else can provide it. The above info relates to a Cummins engine. I don't know the coolant configuration on a CAT and how accessible the elbow might be. If you need further info contact me offline and I will give you my phone #. Lyle Wetherholt 04 Intrigue 11740

Lyle,

The welding part prompts a few questions.
Did you remove the coolant elbow to drill the hole and weld on the fitting? I assume the coolant elbow is steel so could the fitting be silver soldered on? The old controller had a feature that brought the fan up to high speed when the dash AC is turned on. My guess is the new valve you installed cannot do that but has to wait until coolant temp rises. Has this created a sluggish dash AC issue? Thanks,
Norm

Norm,

Good questions. Yes the elbow is steel, yes you remove it (easy but messy) and have the fitting welded on. High pressure in the system so make sure you get a quality weld. You are correct on the dash AC question. This system can (did on mine) install an orfice in line with the pressure hose either on top at the valve or where the two hoses connect. This orfice will allow the fan to run plus or minus 400 rpm to accommodate this issue. I tached the RPM on mine and it ran from 382-406. I don't think you need high speed for the dash AC.

Ken,

I have some pics in my Samsung tablet but I don't know how to post them on this forum. If someone can tell me I will try. If not I can email them from my tablet to anyone who would want them.
