We find ourselves in Ashland next week, wanting to follow 101 up the Oregon Coast. Some local information wanted please on if we have to go all the way north to Grants Pass and then back down into CA to get to 101, or can we use hwy 23 and 33 thru Merlin with a 40 foot coach towing a car??? Any local knowledge available to that part or Oregon.

I would take the 199 over to Crescent city. Its a lot easier going east to west than west to east. TWI 2004

If you want to do the entire southern Oregon Coast (Brookings, Gold Beach, Port Orford, Bandon), then you will have to go west from Grants Pass. You will hit 101 just north of Crescent City. You can though go up I5 past Seven Feathers and take OR 42 over to Coos Bay and continue up. I would not recommend trying the roads mentioned going through Merlin.

Yes, you have to go to Grants Pass. But you will find that's no big deal. Lots of places to stay in So Oregon if you are spending the night.
From Grants Pass, Take 199 to Crescent City and 101/the coast. PERIOD!
You will find that route along the Smith River to give you enough challenges. 40' is the max size motorhome CA actually permits on this route. This really is the best way to go.
Going through Merlin to Agnes to Gold Beach to get to the OR coast is NOT a route to consider. It's a BLM summer road and not for motorhomes, especially towing a car.
The next route north to consider to the OR coast takes off south, below Roseburg. Route 42 to Coos Bay. But, you miss a lot of the coast.

Enjoy you time in Oregon

PS - I live in Grants Pass
