Hello

I have a kvh stationary dome and was thinking about the upgrade to in motion. I was wondering how well in motion worked and also for those of you who upgraded to motostat or another hd capable unit did the installer keep your old unit? I was thinking it may be cheaper to find a used in motion unit as oposed to the $800.00 upgrade just not sure where i would look. Any thoughts?

Rod I don't think you are going to find in-motion for sale any more. Most satellite TV providers are going to multiple satellites , which means that you need an elliptical dish and multiple LNB's and that won't fit or get very good signal in an enclosed dish. I would guess your only choice would be a used one.

We have an old KVH in motion that has been ok for about 10 years.
We use the in motion to find a signal before parking in a site, while moving to record stuff on the DVR, and to listen to music while driving.
You will only get Direct TV standard def signal, no HD. But that gets a decent picture on our LED/LCD tv.

We are not TV gourmands.

Hi Rod

Trac Star, with Dish, can get HD in motion. Check tracstar.com .

Rod,

I am like Dean; except that I have an in-motion "Trac-King, King-Dome" by King Controls. King sells factory refurbished units on-line at substantially reduced prices.
Sadly, mine quit working after about six years due to bad park power. King dome has a great policy. They shipped me all of the parts that I could replace myself with a guaranteed refund if they did not fix the problem. Unfortunately, the problem was beyond a DIY repair. They said that I could ship the entire dome to them for a factory flat rate labor plus parts repair (probably about $300 including shipping). I have not done that yet.
It occurs to me that many old non-HD, tracking domes are probably being removed and replaced with HD capable units. You may want to contact your local satellite installers to see if they have any good used "Take-Offs". I plan to do that when I get back to my home base.
Meanwhile, I bought a King Controls "Vue Cube" from a friend. It has to be set up and connected at each campsite but it allows us to find a signal when trees often obscure direct view of the satellite. It works as advertised. These are also available factory refurbished. I plan to keep it on hand even after I get the King Dome repaired or replaced.
