How do you sanitize a fresh water tank?

When we're connected to city, "chlorinated", water I fill the tank and let it stand a few days, then dump it. Do that a time or two before we move on.

I use 1oz bleach per 10 gallon ratio. Remove filters, fill water tank, and let stand in tank for 3-4 hours or overnight; individually run each faucet/ water line. Drain tank, replace filters, and refill with fresh water.

I copied & pasted the process below.

...flush your recreational vehicle's water system once or twice a year to keep your water fresh. Here's how to sanitize your RV's water supply system:
- Begin with your freshwater tank about half full.
- Turn the water heater off and wait for it to cool.
- Add a cleaning solution to the water tank. Here's where opinions differ. Most people agree that using a household bleach solution is the most effective way to cleanse the bacteria (Note: always dilute bleach with water - about ¼ cup of household bleach for each 15 gallons of tank capacity); however, some people prefer to use milder cleansers like dish detergent, baking soda or vinegar. The bleach solution is the most effective sanitizer, but make sure you flush and rinse well.
- Next, using the water pump (not the external water supply) turn on every hot and cold faucet in the unit, one at a time, letting the chlorinated water run through them for one or two minutes. You should be able to smell the chlorine.
- Top off the RV freshwater tank and let the solution soak overnight if possible.
- Completely drain the system by flushing the faucets for several minutes each.
- Open the freshwater tank drain valve as well as the hot water tank drain plug and drain.
- Close all of the valves and faucets and drain plugs.
- Fill water tank about half full again with fresh water.
- Drive your RV around the block to let the water slosh around, which will help rinse the system.
- Flush each faucet for several minutes each repeating until the tank is again empty. (Make sure you are using the water pump and not an external water supply.)
- Fill the tank again. The water should now be safe to drink but if the chlorine odor is too strong, flush with baking soda or vinegar and repeat the freshwater rinse.
Remember: Never turn on your water heater while it is empty.

On my coach in the bathroom behind the mirror of the medicine cabinet there is a very detailed written procedure on sanitizing the fresh water tank.

Be sure to remove the on-board filters before running the sanitizing solution through the coach plumbing system. On my rig, if the filter is not removed, it will try to remove the clorox.

I don't like carrying (or using) chlorine bleach. Another approach is to use sodium dichlor to sanitize the fresh water tank: very small quantity needed, no chlorine taste, flushing is optional. Just google "sodium dichlor RV fresh water tank" to get the details. Here's a cut-and-paste from another forum.
[[... I recommend you use Sodium Dichloro-s-Triazinetricone or Sodium Dichlor (swimming pool shock powder) instead of household bleach. Sodium Dichlor is a powder and you only need one (1) teaspoon per 100 gallons of fresh water. It is much stronger than household bleach, doesn't leave your water tasting "chloriney" and doesn't need to be flushed out of the system.]]
You can obtain a one pound package (a lifetime supply?!) from any pool supply store for a about $5.

Thanks to everyone for your prompt response concerning sanitizing the fresh water tank. We really appreciate each of you as a valuable resource.
Does anyone have suggestions for where to stop overnight between Springerville, AZ and Durango? Also what are the best 4 wheel places around Silverton and Ouray area? What route would you take to Moab and where would you stay? Any other suggestions for mid or Southeastern Utah? Thanks for your time and consideration.

Up Hwy 191 to I-40 then east to Hwy 666 North to Ship Rock. Then the flatest way is turn east to
Farmington, taking the truck route around town and then Hwy 541 to Aztec.
Then its North on Hwy 550
to Durango. If you go from Ship Rock to Cortez and Across you will have some steep grades to fight a
few miles east of Mancos and a steep grade down in to Durango its self.
Its a simpler route, but going
via Aztec is a gentler drive. I would go to Cortez and across, but that's me. TWI 2004 INTRIGUE 11731
