You need to service the dryer every couple years. There are kits available with the cartridge and purge valve for around $100.
Find the part number on yours and check with Napa or any truck parts place, or go to any shop. They can service it for $200-$300.

Brian I cannot talk to Cummings, but, for CAT Bendix has remanufactured filters which are much cheaper and per Bendix equal in quality. The purge valve is also something that needs to be replaced. There used to be rebuild kits for the purge valve but Bendix no longer offer the rebuild kit and you must replace the valve. Bendix strongly recommends against using non Bendix parts but I don,t know if that is just protecting the turf. After many years of patronizing NAPA, I no longer believe that they are consistently the value leader. Also, the purge valve does not have to be replaced as often as the filter. I replaced my filter after four years and the purge valve afterf 6 years. Neither was exhibiting any signs of failure but I wanted to replace them on my schedule not when they failed.
