We have been planning a trip out west (Indiana is home) and looked at renting an RV for a month. Long story short we ended up buying a 1998 Allure from the original owner instead of renting. If anyone has any recommendations on our itinerary it would be very much appreciated. We have been researching this forum and others for where to stay and what to see. Plan is to hit Mt Rushmore, Devils Tower, Yellowstone, some time in Colorado then home. My wife and I are early 40 with a 14 and 10 year old kiddos and pulling a toad, expecting to be on the road three weeks +/-.

Yellowstone: Fishing Bridge RV Park (?) Found a great informational write up on this forum on how to get in and out of Yellowstone with a big rig.

I would include some time in Cody, WY to visit the Wild Bill Cody Museum. It is great for kids of all ages. Takes the better part of a day, but we are planning on 2 days for our visit with our grandsons in June. There are several good RV parks in the area. A scenic drive for the towed is the Chief Joseph Highway from Yellowstone into Cody. Great for viewing wildlife and just the country in general. Pretty curvy so the driver must pay attention.

In Colorado, you may want to stay at dakota Ridge RV park, to visit Golden, Denver, Georgetown, Hill City. And the near by Cassinos. There's always Durango and the Alpen Rose rv Park and the infamous Durango and Silverton NG RR. There's Ouray, Ridge way and Telluride. I enjoy Salida, Buena Vista, and Lead Ville, too. There's Lake City, Creed, Canon City, Montrose, Winter Park, Aspen, and Breckenridge if you get there during Spring and like to SKI. Rocky Mountain National Park is breath taking. Eastern Colorado is flatter than Kansas. My favorite large city in Colorado is Colorado Springs with near by Pikes Peak, Manitou Springs, and a real architectural treat, the Air Force Academy. The mountains of Colorado are a year around play ground, especially if you like to ski. There's Steamboat Springs, Glen wood Springs, you might even want to take an 3 day trip on Amtrak from Denver to Glenwood Springs to enjoy a great view of the Rocky Mountains, the deep canyons of the Colorado River and have fresh Trout in one of the two Dining cars. Stay over and enjoy the natural hot springs. Most everything being above 5500' you will want to take a few days to acclimate your body and slow down your driving speed while in the Mountains. Nathan, My wife & I just stayed at Fishing Bridge In August of 2012. It's a little tight for big rigs but quite doable. You will have to unhook your toad but plenty of room for this. Overall it's a nice park in the right location. BOOK EARLY, they do fill up.
We found the roads in Yellowstone quite ok, a little narrow at times.

In Hill City is the Black Hills Institute. If anyone in the family is into fossils and dinasaurs this is a must see. We loved it, they are the people who found the T-Rex's Stan and Sue.
Be sure to see Rushmore at night in addition to the day time. There is a terrific program associated with the lighting of the monument. Not to miss.
Sturgis motorcycle rally is Aug 5-11, 2013. A week before and after the parks are full of motorcycle folks, can be very loud and maybe not so family friendly :-)
Have a wonderful time. Yellowstone is awesome too.

Here's another vote for SW Colorado. Durango, Silverton, etc.. are amazing. I could spend the whole summer there.

On the way to Rushmore you can spend the night at the Badlands National Park and take a drive through the park. There is an excellent NPS campground there that now has electric hookups.

Can anybody help with this? My wife is planning our route through WY.
Can we can do interstate 14, 16, 20 and drive through the mountains, instead of staying on 91. We added the destination Wild Bill Coty Museum and it (Google Maps) changed our route.

Nathan, her choice of The Wild Bill Cody Musesum is a MUST. 14/16/20 is fine from Yellowstone into Cody and over yo Greybull also south to Themopolis.
You'll have to hear from others on the trip to either Greybull to Sheriden or Worland to Buffalo.
