I do not know how anyone can figure the odds. Many fires or failures are not reported to anyone except Norcold/Dometic. My fire destroyed an RV that was worth more than my house and it never even made the local news. The fire department said there had been two other RV refer fires that week in our area.
The waters are further muddied by Norcold's blaming fires on its own authorized recall fixers. To my knowledge, my insurance company, USAA, has not been reimbursed by Norcold. A class action likely will just lead Norcold into a sham bankruptcy...
If anyone wants to know about these fires, this forum is a great start. A search of the archives will reveal that I and many others have made sure to encourage frank discussion of this very dangerous problem both before and especially since my fire in 10/2011.
I will repeat my previous warnings: We were fortunate that we were not in the unit when it went up, that it had not fit into the RV side of our garage, and that we were only a few minutes from a fire department and not in a campground next to you. Still, the outside wall and roof had a big hole where the refer used to be and the inside of the coach was toast, literally.
Note: All recalls had been done and there was never ever any obvious failure otherwise. I kept thermometers in both sections of the refer and it never failed until it failed big time (on AC).

Not totally correct. FEMA, as I understand it, collects information about RV fires. Perhaps someone could check it out?

Group, I just uploaded a report, "Motorhome Recreational Vehicle Fire Investigation," to the Files section. Interested parties should find this report of interest. For example, did you know there are at least five major causes of Motorhome fires?

We stayed in our coach for 7 months in an upscale RV park in CA.
This is only subjective thought, but the failure rate of the Norcold appears to be significant.
Our Norcold failed ( 6 years old) luckily w/o a fire while staying in the park.
The repairman said he does enough repairs on Norcold to pay the bills each and every month... ( in the park... with 120+ sites)
We had not done enough research to make the decision replace/install a residential fridge.. and sure wish we had. J
