I always remove the bottom bolt/ nut which should be the end covered by the dust cover then push it all the way til retracted. If I remember correctly there is 1 1/2 turns total clockwise or counter clockwise all the way in is for stiff ride out for less. Hope the helps.

We normally take them to the max. seems to work for the best ride..
