We are planning a trip to Custer, SD and on to West Yellowstone.
I would appreciate any info on best way.

The last time I went from Custer to Gillette, Wyo on my way to West Yellowstone there was still a few miles of fairly narrow 2 lane road on Hwy 16. Its easier going west as you are not on the outside lane hanging over the edge, so to speak if you were going east. But you will be crossing over the center line going around a few curves, so stay below the recommended curve speeds and keep alert. Your wheel base is only a few inches longer than mine; though, you have more front and rear overhang. It was 4 years ago when I made the trip. TWI 42' 2004 intrigue 11731.

If you need a place to stay for the night before getting into Cody, try the Greybull KOA. Very friendly, owners, clean, and big rig friendly.

Yellowstones Edge RV Park is about 30 miles north of the north entrance to the park and is great. Right on the Yellowstone River...beautiful area, nice drive from the park and if you open your windows at night the river sounds will lull you to sleep each night. :)

As second else has said route 16 ( iron mountain road) from Rushmore to Custer state park is a challenging road. Some 360 turns and narrow short tunnels. Had my wife walk through tunnel to make sure we had no oncoming traffic.
Something to talk about 14 years later.

Whatever you do don't take a big rig on the Custer State Park Wildlife Loop Road! Watch out for all the motorcycles.

Don't know your schedule or where you plan to stay. In park? Outside of park and toad it in for day trips? etc.
If you have time, one option is to take a few days going into Yellowstone. Coming in from the South entrance, would allow you a few days of driving in from the Tetons. We like the Tetons as much as we do Yellowstone. Gross Vente(SP) park is a good option for a day or two stay to enjoy the Teton's area.
Running up North, a stay at Colter Bay is another good stop for a few days. Then into Yellowstone proper, large rigs can stay in park at Fishing Bridge, which some people like, but it really is tight on space. Or, you could run up and out the West Entrance and stay in the parks around or in West Yellowstone. Grizzly RV is a nice park, that many people like.
When leaving, again if time permits, running up from West Yellowstone skirting along the West edge, and actually into the park lands, of Yellowstone - is one of the most scenic drive's we've been on.
Toad'ing into the park for day runs will allow you to explore and get into the places that Yellowstone offers.
