Back in early 2000's CC recommended removing the flap if you were going to Alaska.

Now I read this... We went to Alaska last year and I had my flap on. I'm not sure if the flap caused all the rocks to completely destroy my new tow vehicle, but it did happen. It cost the insurance company almost $9K to replace all the chrome, paint and other things on the front of the vehicle. I did have a front bra and a front windshield cover, but the rocks did their damage. Good luck in your travels, it was a great trip and will probably do it again.

Other than to provide free advertising, can anyone tell me what the flap achieves?

Jim, do you tow a vehicle?

After our trip to Alaska the front of my van looked like it had been shot blasted all the way from the front bumper to include the front window and side mirrors. I had the mud flap on. I don't know if this would have occurred with the flap off or not. I now travel without the flap and got rid of the van.

Hi Jim,

What engine is in the Tribute? A C9 or ISL?

Thanks,

We have done the ALCAN and Top of the World highways several times with our 02 Envoy in tow. Early on, we purchased a "Towcar Cover" for the front of the car. With the coach rear mud flap hanging in its normal position, we would always find the car covered with small rock/gravel at the end of a days drive. So I began wiring the flap up so as to keep it from bouncing on the road as we went. Guess what? On our last transit from Alaska down to the lesser world, we had no gravel accumlation on the tow cover or on top of the car. Wiring the rear mud flap up so that it could not bounce along as we went has made a lot of difference, IMHO. I have not yet removed the rear mud flap but do keep it wired up out of the way.

A few months ago there were some discussion about someone needing a rear mud flap.
There was some offers by people on this site not needing their's anymore. Are there any left out there that are in great shape and willing to get rid of? Thanks
