Now that I replaced the old TV with a flat screen, I found Goodwill don't accept tube-type TVs. Hate to throw it in the garbage, it still worked last time I turned it on.

The law in most states prohibits throwing TVs and computers in the trash.
In California Goodwill used to accept them for recycling, you will need to find a recycler to stay legal.

Maybe a shelter? All they need is a digital converter box and it will work fine.

Try Best Buy for recycling. I just took keyboards and lots of old cables and other hard to recycle stuff to them. You can check online to see what they accept.

Set it out by the curb the night before trash day and it should be gone by morning.

============================================================================== In California there are electronic waste recycling operations in MANY areas. Just check the phone book (remember those?).
Also, in my community the local middle and high schools often conduct electronic waste recycling days (usually on a Saturday). They are fundraisers for various school programs. Last Saturday, I was able to dispose of two computers, a printer, a speaker set, multiple ZIP discs, and other paraphernalia, for the princely sum of twenty dollars...and it went to a good cause to boot.

If you have a local fish wrap in your community, these events are often publicized therein. And major intersections often have sandwich boards on strategic corners to advertise these events.

It is good of you to want to help the planet.
