Greetings
Just saw a 38% bump in my premium with Progressive. Have been claims free and had deductible "disappear" as they advertise, but they decided to raise my premium by a whopping 38%.
Before letting them use smoke and mirrors to "adjust" the policy, I'd like to get a few quotes from other reputable agencies our CC members use.
I just want to compare apples to apples.
Can anyone recommend a company they've dealt with for more than 5 years and been happy with the product.
Thanks so much in advance for your responses, Ed

Ed,
Just renewed my coach policy with Progressive last week and it went up only 10% from last year. We too are claims free with no deductible.

Havent received the Bus renewal for this year yet, BUT on all our commercial and homeowners policies are showing a minimum of 20% up to 35% increases. Doesnt seem to matter if there are no claims. Good luck in a lower premium.

We are full timers and use National Interstate Insurance. Buy it thru one of their agents. They do go up a little each year but not that much! No claims thank goodness but so far we're happy and are not changing. They also insure our toad.

Same experience. I shopped around and finally settled on Good Sam. Was still an increase from previous year but by 1/2 of Progressive quote.

I was insured with Progressive and thought my rates were high... then I saw an ad in Family Motorcoaching Mag for Good Sam insurance, so I called them and in 10 minutes on the phone they cut my rates in half, same coverage with Allied. I think Progressive is paying Flo way too much money these days

Sorry about the rate jump. I currently have "Travelers Insurance". I had a claim last year after our trip to Alaska..it was in the neighborhood of $8K and my insurance went down $2 this year...go figure..
You do need to look for different insurance and then call them and see if they will lower your rate they now want you to pay. Dave

I'm glad we are talking about insurance. I was just about to start a post.
Our situation may be slightly different from most of you. We are not full-timers and it is our first year insuring our Allure, so I don't have any prior years to compare to.
I am currently with Foremost. Our other home and auto insurance is with Farmers, but apparently they don't do motorhome insurance in Utah.
I realize everyone's situation is different, but here is what I am currently paying. Honestly I was shocked at the high rate. I am the only driver rated and my record is 100% clean for years.

Ed - Our policy went up some 20% overall and almost 90% in comprehensive. Have never put a claim in either and our driving records are squeaky clean. Some things that are going on include RV frig damage, weather pattern changes and resultant damage, windshields and other frivolous claims put in by people using the insurance company as a socialized repair service. All of this increases the amount of bread the insurance companies need to pay out. Net result is those costs get passed on to policy holders. We've delved into this a bit more and need to get that information out there for folks to digest. We've compiled 5 years of data to include graphs. It's enlightening. When time permits it will get published. Keep in mind that insurance companies aren't in the business of paying claims. As for reputable, you'll never know until you need a claim paid off. And each individual situation is different. Some go well and others are horrific! This means you can't really get a reliable service review since someone else's bad experience may not apply. Same true for a good experience. I like to call it pot luck. Having a good insurance agent helps. We prefer a small independent business owner/agent rather than the party line teleprompter experience. And what did you say your name was?? All of our service consultants are assisting other customers at the moment.
My experiences with insurance companies (vehicle, medical) have generally been bad. An interest comment from someone that hasn't been a power user of those services. What I don't like is all the smoke, mirrors and opacity in their business models. In many cases their interactions with customers are deceptive, misleading and down right dishonest. It's all about the bread and collecting as much of it as possible. The industry is so bad that state regulators have stepped in to contain it. All I can say is good luck

I've had insurance through Gilbert for years. I assumed they were looking out for me each year and providing me with the best rate. (It was a better rate than Progressive, Geico, FMCA, etc) Gilbert has been sold and the new person said they don't have time to look for the best rate for each person every year. Ironically I filled out a rate quote on their website and got an email from Blue Sky RV Insurance. Not sure how they are connected with the new company that owns Gilbert. The Blue Sky rate was less than the best rate Gilbert could find so I just switched.

Another story:
I just received my renewal from National Interstate. My comprehensive went up 81.9% and the total went up 19.7%. But that's only part of the story. When comparing the details of the package I noticed that this year they rated me as using my MH less than 30 days per year. I was never asked if that was accurate. I questioned my agent and was told that it was new this year. They (National Interstate) have separated usage to less than 30, 30 to 150 and greater than 150.
When I told him that I fell in the 30 to 150 days he said that the rate had to be adjusted again: now it is up 30.9% total and 93.3% on comprehensive.
The main reason that mine is so off the wall is that I still had TOTAL LOSS REPLACEMENT on my 2002 coach. It use to be very reasonable to keep that coverage but no more.
Progressive was competitive but not worth changing.
That's my story and I'm stuck with it!

Hi Dick,
Thanks for the update on National Interstate info. I too am insured with National Interstate. I have my MH and car both insured thru them. I just received my renewal notice for my car and it went up $600 for the year. It was $1600 a year and it went up to $2200 for the year (I have a Chevy Volt and am insured in Nevada). Obviously I will be price shopping for new car insurance.
I did just put in a claim for my damaged awning it will cost over $7,000 for a new one installed and painted. First claim I have ever done in my life for RV or Car insurance and I have been insured with National Interstate since 11/03. It will be interesting to how much my MH insurance will go up with National Interstate when it is time to renew.

Can someone comment on my rate? You can email me off the board if you want. I don't have any problem stating the dollar amount, it is what it is. Just as much an expense as diesel fuel...except fuel does get me somewhere! :-)

If it is promoted by Good Sam, it is probably what used to be GMAC. They have several new names for their insurance (I think National General may also be one) carriers. I would beware of them, as I would beware of Camping World and everything else having to do with Good Sam. I once had GMAC and they cancelled my coverage while I was on a trip because they said I did not respond to a letter (duh, I was on a trip!). My attorney told me that had I had a claim and they denied it, I could have easily won in court. Fortunately, I did not. But, when I returned and raised hell with them, they appologized profusely and offered to reinstate my exact coverage for a premium 450% higher! Good deal, huc?
I dodn't do a lot of business with Good Sam and its affiliates.

Someone mentioned that taking off the 3M Coach Shield from the front of the coach was a matter of heating up the shield and then pulling it off.
Question I have is: Has anyone tried to do this themselves? Can you remove it by simply using a hair dryer, heating up the shield, and then pulling it off? Or is it more difficult than that? Thinking of trying to do this myself since I have the time to do it (not sure I have the patience for it tho). Mine is badly blistered so don't know if there are some special tricks to removing the 3M shield with it being as badly blistered as it is.
Thanks in advance for any advice,

I have a 2004 CC Inspire. Just spent 6 days nonstop removing that shield. If you have no patience hire a professional. I used a heat gun and nylon scraper to remove the top layer, then a 3m adhesive remover that I ordered from Amazon.com to remove the adhesive. It's not easy but can be rewarding.

Rick, I tried to remove a small portion on the face of my entry steps in preparation for installing some polished stainless steel from Summit Armor. I used a heat gun. I spent nearly two hours and only was able to remove half of that small piece. I gave up, scuffed the area with a scotch brite pad and stuck the stainless panel on with VHB tape and 252 Sikaflex.
I don't see how you can easily get the stuff off. Must be some magic I don't know. I'd love to get the stuff off my coach before it starts to look nasty like some I've seen.

Wow ... you have some serious patience to do that. Sounds like you have to use a heat gun vs a hair dryer to do this job; I assuming the hair dryer probably does not get hot enough to do this. Was your 3M shield badly blistered; and after you removed the shield, was your paint still in good condition?
Thanks,

Rick,
I did the job this summer. I used a heat gun and a metal putty knife that I dulled and rounded the corners on to minimize the possibility of gouging thru the clear coat.
The mask must be scraped off.........not peeled off. I you try to peel it off cold or even warmed it will take pieces clear coat off with it and you'll only get pieces the size of a pea. It is VERY tedious, time consuming work. I've got approx 110 hours into mine so far and I still have the bumper to go.
Great care must be taken not to linger with the heat gun or the underlying paint will come off right down to the bare fiberglass.
The mask will become sticky and then it can be scraped off with the putty knife. After that, the underlying adhesive coat must be removed using 3M adhesive remover.
My mask got to looking so gnarly that I really had no choice but to make the attempt. The results make me glad that I did.
Aside from loosening a spot of paint the size of a quarter next to the pass. side headlight, the results are outstanding. Absolutely looks (and is) brand a new and flawless finish.

Thanks Gary for info. I will be going to Junction City this week to see Straightline and Carrier & Sons. I will see what kind of advice they give me. I was thinking since I was going to be there for a couple of weeks I would try myself to remove it if all there were going to do was have someone patiently use a heat gun and scrapper to remove it.
I will share the info I receive from Straighline Paint shop after I visit with them.

I removed mine - - what a chore! And what a mess!
Estimated to have it professionally done were in the thousands, and no one was keen on the job.
I used plastic razor blades on heated film. First I tried a heat gun but it had a tendency to melt the film. I switched to a steamer and that was much better.
This process only removed the film (in tiny pieces), but left behind a hideous mess of adhesive residue. I tried the 3M adhesive remover but couldn't get it to keep from evaporating to quickly to soften the goo.
I finally settled on Astro Pneumatic 400E6 6 Pack, Smart Eraser Pad For Pinstripe Removal Tool from Amazon. This was a mess, but it worked like a champ.
I was left with pristine paint. I had new 3M reapplied. All is well.
In retrospect, I abused the hell out of my original 3M, and it threw in the towel. I'll take better care of it this time (regular application of 303, no pressure washing or abrasive bug removers, etc.).
Good luck!
Jay

It took 2 people 2 full days to remove the 3m crap, except a 24" strip below the headlights. Use a heat gun on low, hold about 2" away until film is warm, being very careful not to get too hot or will burn paint underneath. Then use plastic scraper to remove the film. Then we used Goo Gone to remove the adhesive. Took about 4 bottles of Goo Gone. Apply, allow to sit for a few minutes, then wipe with dry cloth. Takes some elbow grease to wipe off the adhesive. Most body and paint shops that specialize in RVs will remove, but they won't guarantee that they won't have to repaint the front. We got 2 estimates, each about $1000 to just remove it. Did scrape the paint in a couple of spots. We're headed to Bremen IN to have the rest removed and the front repainted.

Thanks for all the responses. It looks like I will be in for quite "a battle" to remove the film; I imagine I will be swearing a lot. I will check with Straightline and Carrier & Sons before I start this project to see what they say.
Once I do have it removed, I am very reluctant to apply the 3M shield again unless they have improved it since 2003. I will check into possible alternatives to the 3M. I will post what I learn after I visit Straightline, etc. in Junction City.

We had Dazzling Detailing in Florida remove ours. Two men with hard plastic scrapers spent about two hours each removing film. Then spent another hour and a half removing glue with solvent, washing and waxing finished product. No heat guns were used. Cost was $600.

A lot of the problems with 3M is the treatment of the product. I have seen detailers using very aggressive techniques to clean the material which really is a rather soft plastic.
My 3M still looks pretty good after 6 plus years.

My 3m film was cracked and had mildew in all the cracks. Ugly. The paint underneath was in excellent shape. In addition to the 3m adhesive remover I used two other products in conjunction. Oops and Goo Gone. These two can be purchases at your local Auto Parts Store. Good luck. Incidentally I did mine in Spring when it was still very cool. Summertime should help.
