Coach needs to be towed 45 miles tomorrow. What is the towing procedure to ensure safe arrival of coach at destination.

Thanks in advance for the info.

John, If you are a member of FMCA, look up the June 2011 FMCA magazine online and look for John Hawkins article 'Beating the Breakdown Blues'. John made a presentation at the Indy FMCA convention in 2012 that was a not to miss seminar on towing for those of us with big rigs.

It isn't hard really. Put the ramps under the front wheels and tie them down. Hook into the air brake system so the tow truck can actuate the coach brakes. Release the parking brake on the coach. Remove the driveshaft. Raise the front end. Attach the brake/turn signal lights. They are a wireless connection to the tow truck.. Tie up the rear mud flap so it won't drag. Tow away. That is basically it.

I was towed 65 miles one way. I was scared to death but the tow driver was a pro and we arrived in great shape. Just stay out of the way and let him do the job.
Hopefully you have Coachnet or equivalent

Does this same procedure apply to tag axle models?

Does anyone know how the tow truck ties into the coach air brakes? Is there a connection somewhere or do they have to cut into an air line?

Norm,

On my coach, there is a connection in the front left bay. It is below the drivers seat area. I believe there are only two ways to tow or transport MH. If it can driven, drive it up and onto a flat trailer. The other is the tow truck method and the drive shaft "HAS" to be disconnected. If I'm wrong, those with more experience, please correct me.

Thank to all who were helpful in my endeavor to tow my MH.

The coach was towed on a flat bed trailer. The trailer wheels moved forward lowering the bed. Coach was winched rearward up the ramp, wheels moved back to raise bed, tied down and air bags dumped and ready to go within an hour. The towing company had to get an OR over height permit and a pilot car, quite a sight going down the road. Made it CAT with no damage, made the repair and am back on the road.

Thanks again

The Coach's front end began to shake violently. It was repaired and the fix was 'found linkage to leveling valve nut had backed off and caused linkage to disconnect from leveling valve. Reposition linkage back onto leveling valve and ran repaired system"

I can see now that the fitting in the compartment under the drivers seat will allow the tow truck to air up the coach air system. This would take care of the air bags and release the park brake. There was mentioned in earlier posts regarding the tow truck connection to the MH brakes. I took that to mean the tow truck had a way to actuate the MH brakes when the tow truck stepped on it's brake pedal. Now I think it meant the connection is to only release the parking brake and air up the system. Is this correct?

Yes, suspension and brake release only.

Thanks for the clarification. Tow trucks must have big brakes.

Hi Mikee,

Do you know what air fitting "Type" that is typicaly used by the Heavy Duty Tow Trucks. I think it is a much larger connector. It would be nice to have one set up ahead of time in case a conversion is necessary.

Take care and be safe,

No, It is a standard connector. They all carry enough adapters to make it work.
