Do you own a 2005 to 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee or 2006 to 2010 Jeep Commander that you tow behind your motorhome that has been recalled by Chrysler? I do and the recall repair apparently has rendered the 4WD neutral inoperative.
In other words I can no longer tow it! Many, many other owners of these Jeeps have this problem as well as the loss of the 4WD low gear. Chrysler has told them that the recall could not have caused the damage. To restore the 4WD neutral (and 4WD low) is reported to me to be between $800 and $1,000..... but the part is back-ordered with no estimate of availability.
I would like to hear your status. And, if you have one of these Jeeps and not had the recall "repair" done, my suggestion is DON'T!

Dick: This is outside your years but I have a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee 8 cyl. 4 wheel drive. It is and must be a quadra trac II. 73,000 mi. I put the transfer case in Neutral, the gear shift in Park, and the key in Acc, and away I go. Have towed over 35,000 miles and no problems. Barrie Boas 94 Concept 5111

I have a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I had the recall done, and when I went to tow, I could not get the transfer case into neutral. Luckily the Jeep dealer was close, so I drove it over there and they looked at it and said it was a software "glitch". They fixed it, no charge, and I have been towing it since with no issues.

I should have included that the recall was on Jeeps with the Quadra-Drive II and the Quadra-Trac II 4WD systems.
Just for additional info on the recall, I found it very interesting that Chrysler found the problem to be a cracked circuit board in relevant component and came up with a SOFTWARE UPDATE TO FIX IT! Is that creative or what?

And, sorry, I forgot my signature:

I have a 2006 Grand Cherokee with Quadra Drive II, Hemi and a 4" lift which I tow behind my 2005 Inspire. I took it in to the local Jeep dealer on August 26 for a recall for Transfer Case Neutral unintentional shifting. In mid October I took it to St. George Utah to do some 4 Wheeling with the FMCA4Wheelers. After a week of fun the transfer case would not shift into low range or neutral. The local Jeep dealer said the transfer shift motor was shot and the electrical pigtail needed to be replaced. The $690 shift motor is unavailable; there is a backlog of 59 motors on order. To get it home I pulled both driveshafts.

I wish I had heard about your advice not to do the recall.

Thanks for the advice we have a 2005 grand cherokee with Quadra Drive II and had the recall done. I just went out and tried to shift the transfer case into neutral and it says to service 4 wheel drive system. Will be going to jeep dealer this afternoon.

Let me know how you make out with your dealer, Dave. I went to my dealer today to discuss a plan of attack.

Al, do you have any details on the "fix"? I've been to three dealers and none had a clue of how to fix it other than replace the very expensive part.

Dick: They just told me it was a software glitch. It took them about 15 minutes to fix it. They seemed to be aware of the issue and what to do. I suggest you have your dealer call my dealer. It is Oxendale Chrysler Dodge Jeep in Cottonwood, AZ. Their # is 928-634-3656. Good luck!

I have an appointment for 8 am monday morning so they can investigate and see what the problem is. Will keep you informed. I just got off the phone with Jeep (800-992-1992) and they are not aware of anyone having a problem shifting the transfer case into neutral.

This post alarmed me since I had the recall work done since the last towing.

My 2005 JGC still shifts into 4WD Neutral, thankfully.

Go onto jeepforum.com and look for N23 recall issue and you will find 24 pages of stories from 8/13/13 on about problems with the shifter.

I had the N23 xfer case recall flash update done in late Aug. Soon thereafter, I noticed I could not shift into 4wd low. After some research, determined it was A result of the recall and took it back to Jeep for a reflash. Once again, my 4wd low and more importantly neutral were working again. Even towed the Jeep on a weekend fishing trip. A few weeks later, I packed and hooked up the toad for another trip, however, I soon discovered that neutral access was out again. My new xfer case actuator is on order along with something like 450 others back ordered. Delivery estimate for installation is 07Dec.

And now, the rest of the story: I went to my local dealer... ready to do battle over the actuator. Chrysler told them to run diagnostics to see if the problem was the recall or not (ha). The diagnostics showed that the recall did not cause the problem (surprise). So the dealer asked if I wanted them to continue trouble shooting or not. I told them to continue?. I had no other choice.
Guess what they found. A broken electrical connector on the side of actuator! The only fix is to replace the actuator. I'm not a skeptic, but??.
So, the part is ordered (on backorder) and maybe will be available before I return to pick up my motorhome on December 28th. If not, I may have to get my '98 Cherokee out of moth balls!

Everyone who cannot get it to shift in neutral needs to call Jeep at 800-992-1992 and flood them with calls to make them aware of a problem.

Just got home from my Jeep dealer. Last week when I made the appointment they told me the actuator or motor was bad and would have to be changed but they would diagnosis it. This morning they found C140F code and cleared this code. I tried it twice and everything works ok as it did before the recall. This leads me to believe they did not perform the N23 recall correctly. Step #15 of the recall procedure states "C140F must be be cleared three times". There was no charge for this this AM as there should not have been since they didn't do it properly the first time. (But they didn't admit it, of course.) Before your dealer starts changing actuators make sure the recall was done correctly (step #15)
