Title: C-13 primer

Just changed filters. The fuel line from the main filter had a small leak as it went through a 90 degree half inch fitting on its way to the C-13 Cat engine.
The mechanics fixed that, now they cannot get engine started.
It appears to me they introduced air into the supply system and it did not automatically purge it. Any ideas how to get fuel flowing again.

John,

On my coach (Cummins 370) to purge the fuel lines automatically you turn on the ignition and wait for the pump to stop. Turn off the ignition and turn it on again. Wait for pump to stop. Do this a few times. Then start the engine. Works for me.
Remark: my coach has an automatic fuel pump shut off after about 30 seconds. Hence the repetition of the process.

Yes, if you have the dual fuel filter set-up with the small pump over one filter, that can be used to purge any air in the fuel line, which is your likely problem.


Here is the procedure -

Open the 7/8"? (?) bleeder nut below the pump about ¾-1 turn. Do not remove.
Unscrew the locking threaded cap at the base of the pump. Pull the pump out (only 2-4"? long).
Open the fuel line valve above the smaller filter.
Start pumping. Take your time. Watch for fuel to fill the fuel bowl. The bleeder nut base should show gurgles/bubbles and drip fuel. When the bubbles/gurgles stop and only diesel fuel drips at the base of the bleeder, pump a few more times to be sure. By now you'll have pumped 50-100 times.
Close the Bleeder nut and snug it up.
Start pumping again. If all has been done correctly you'll only get 5-10 pumps in and then it'll feel like you're pushing against a concrete wall. Give it one more push in and close the locking threaded cap.
If all has been done correctly, your engine should start as normal. Let it run 1-2 minutes and then check for leaks.
You are good to go.

I have lost the prime twice on my coach with C-9. Solution was to remove both fuel filters, fill with fuel, reattach, coach starts.


This was the solution CC told me back in 2007. Both time I had to insist to the mechanics that this would work and it did.

On my Magna with C-12 there is a manual pump attached to the secondary filter base. I'll bet you have one too. Pump it until it becomes very hard to pump.
