My drivers side slide topper is not retracting completely when I pull in the slide. I have a 2005 Inspire 330 #51264. Can anyone tell me how I can increase the spring tension and lubricate the spring? Thanks in advance.

RJ, I have attached to PDF files of pages 4 & 5 from the installation manual for these awning. You can see how they relese the tension from the factory. I think you can follow how you can release the tenion and then tighten the spring.
Hope this is of some help.
PS. I had the awning replaced with just topper material and added window awnings to all the windows on the D/S of coach. Best decision I ever made. I hated those combos from the first time I used them.

RJ,
Before you adjust anything, make sure your awning pull strap isn't the cause.
Do you have a pull strap grommet retaining clip on the topper housing? Do you retract the slide with the grommet fixed in the clip? If so, that will prevent the spring roller from completely retracting the topper.
Try retracting the slide with the pull strap hanging free and see if it makes any difference. I adjusted the spring tension twice with no success. The puckered topper fabric along the pull strap line was my clue that the pull strap was under tension when the slide was retracted.

Thanks Jay, leaving the awning strap not attached to the grommet seems to have fixed the problem. Thanks to all for the help you have provided. This forum is always a great source. RJ 2005 Inspire #61264

I was at a show and asked the Carefree people about my slide topper not retracting. There comment was that I have to extend the awning all the way every time I open is then it will close properly. Started doing that and no more problems. Sometimes when I am in a hurry I can get it retract however usually not twice in a row. Hope this makes sense. General information for adjusting slide topper: Each awning tube has two square pivot stubs at their end points, two end caps, two attaching arms, two attaching points on coach. You will be unscrewing the two bolts holding the tubes to the coach. This leaves the end cap attachment arm still secured to the stub on awning tube (gives a leverage arm for spring adjustment).
The basic method to adjust spring tension to enable the slide topper for full retraction is to add additional turns to the tension spring. The awning tube has to be able to move 2-3 inches horizontally to allow for the end cap attachment bar to rotate. Thus both ends have to be free from where they attach to the coach. When this is accomplished, a temporary support has to be established. I suggest using a piece of wood, lying it flat on the top surface of the slide (counter balanced by weights) and protruding out past the edge of the slide where the awning tube can rest. Detach the free wheeling end and support it with the wood.
At this point, a major caution is in order. When the spring tension end cap is detached, the spring could be free to unwind if not secured. If the spring gets to whipping around, it could cause major damage or injury to whatever it strikes.
While holding on to the tube from end cap, unscrew bolt (at coach) and pull awning 2-3 inches horizontally to free circular movement. Rotate AGAINST tension force a couple turns. Reverse procedure to original position, test for desired correction, and adjust as necessary.
Hope this helps. Fritz Gillespie-1998 Allure 30223
