Our toilet won't hold water in the bowl. I cleaned the groove and it seemed to work, but then it only lasted a very short time. How deep is the groove? Any ideas? Thanks, John 03Allure30951

Not sure what a flapper is. Our toilet has a ball. The ball is seated on 2 gaskets that get debris between them/on them and won't hold water. You can clean the gaskets or replaced them. If you have it done it's probably less expensive to replace them, if you do it yourself, you can clean them. We have a 98 Intrigue and have never replaced them. Not hard to do, just remove the top of the toilet and remove the gaskets. I usually remove the whole toilet then pressure wash everything.
BTW toilet is a Sealand Traveler

John,
My 2003 Allure had a Thetford Aria electric toilet. It indeed had a flapper and not a ball. The flapper slides in a grove around the interior of the waste pipe. Occasionally the flapper will catch some paper as it closes and jam it into the grove. Eventually the flapper can not seat far enough into the grove to not leak water by. Thetford used to make a tool to run around the inside of the grove to clean it out but I used an offset screwdriver. In a pinch I have bent the tip of a cut off piece of a metal coat hanger. The grove is maybe a 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep. Whatever you try be careful as the grove can be damaged and then you will have to replace its liner to keep it from leaking. Sometimes the flapper itself gets damaged.
If you can not get the grove clean the you may have to replace the flapper and the part with the grove. I have done that and it is not a difficult job unless you have an aversion to working around toilets. You will have to take the toilet up and out to work on it. I got the part from Thetford if I remember.
