The grade NW to Pendleton from LaGrande is not to be feared, just respected. The grade is somewhat steep but wide as you leave Meachum. Just use your Jake brake and go slow: 35-40 should be ok for most of the grade. The road NW out of Joseph and 204/11 on to Walla Walla is a go slow, beautiful drive. As you drop into the Walla Walla valley the view is grand. There are two passes but they are doable. Just treat it like a Sunday drive with the family. We just returned home from that area and wish we had stayed.

Thanks for that update. We will be heading out in a few weeks and will be going on that interstate. I have not been down those grades in a RV, just my car. While not really worried I was a bit concerned. That said I have been all over the western mountains in my 2007 Ford V10 x 38' and have survived so I hope my newly resurrected 42' x 2004 CC Intrigue Tag Axle will not be any worse in the mountains and hopefully better.

We have that coach with the Cat C12. No power problems at all even when towing on grades. Can't speak to the 400 Cummins.

The Allison control panel does not have a switch labeled for Jake break. Only one labeled as fast idle. The brake is always on when I let off the foot switch or touch the brake. Any suggestions will be appreciated. I will be taking the RV to Allison next week for a checkup. Any suggestions on what to have the service is welcome Glen Burgess 2004 CC Intrigue

Glen, re-check your rocker switches. Should see one for "Exhaust Brake".
It must be switched on if your getting Jake brake activation.

Mine says "Engine Brake" 1 position forward part of the switch all the way down. Should get a light on panel, when it is operational.

The rocker switch for the engine brake is just to the right of the idle switch. With the switch in the
center position the engine brake is off. With the switch pushed down the brake works on 3 cylinders
only. With the switch pushed in the the up position the brake works on all six cylinders. If you are
using the correctly rated engine oil your oil pressure with the brake on while descending a hill should be
50 to 60 lbs as indicated on the oil pressure gauge when above 1800 rpm.
Remember its safe for the
engine to operate to 2550 rpm with engine brake on and your foot off the throttle. Your transmission
indicator should show 4th gear as the gear the transmission will eventually shift to as you slow down.
As I drive in the steep hills of the Rockies, Sierras, Cascades, and in the north west I had my
transmission reprogramed to seek 2nd gear as I slow down. If the grade is too steep and the rpm keeps
climbing, once you reach 2600 rpm the transmission will up shift to protect the engine. If I know there
is a steep grade coming up I will slow to 55 to allow the transmission to shift to 4th gear automatically
to control the speed. If the grade approaches 7+ % I slow down to allow the transmission to shift into
3rd to control the decent and turn on my flashers. My coach is 42 ft and I weigh 42 to 43,000 lbs with
my car connected. If your coach is shorter, 40' or 38', your results will be better do the lower
combined weight.

Thanks for the information. I checked the rocker switches and the one mentioned (right of center) has a picture of a light on it. The one in the center has IDLE ADJUST on the rocker and the far left rocker has a picture of a light. I will check the switch on Sunday when I return home. I just picked up the coach from the Cummins shop after having them do a complete run through on the engine, oil, coolant, chassis, belts, hoses, generator, all new filters including air and compressed air, and visual brake and hub oils. There is no current problem with the radiator but they could not tell me if it was a replacement. Lets just say doing all of this is a bit expensive. Next week I will have it at the Allison shop for a complete workup and programming check. Also will have them checking the pump (spline shaft) for the fan and steering. After that it will be going to HWH for a run through and check. HWH is only about 80 miles away so that is easy. I think taking charge of a unused, not driven vehicle is more expensive than I had anticipated. However, if I can fix most of the anticipated problems I will only need to worry about the unanticipated ones when I head to Washington State from Iowa in a few weeks.
