Title: Paint blistering and peeling on 2000 Magna HELP

I would appreciate some help. I tried reading other posts about paint and I am confused. I have a 2000 Magna that has taken a beating in the sun. I have had shards of paint? clear coat? gel coat? coming off. NOW I see the "paint" underneath what peeled off is blistering and bubbling up. The blistering is quite exstensive. I don't know what the difference is between paint, gelcoat and clear coat. Maybe someone can explain to me what I am seeing and what it is.
Can anyone give me a recommendation in the southwest, Arizona preferably for decent paint shops? Can anyone give me a ballparl figure on what it would cost to have the coach repainted? I assume with all the blistering, it cannot be touched up and would have I to be completely painted. Am I mistaken?

Any explanations and suggestions would be appreciated.

Having worked for a paint company for 32 years I can explain the typical paint system you should have on your coach. The gel coat is part of the fiberglass panels that are installed on the coach during the coach build process. When the coach is delivered to the paint shop the gel coat should be lightly sanded to establish an anchor pattern for the primer coat. Next a primer coat should be applied, usually gray in color. After the primer the base coat/color coat is applied. The final coating is the clear coat. A quality paint job should have multiple 3-5 clear coats applied. Generally speaking high quality acrylic urethanes will provide the best long term UV resistance.

I have a 40' 2000 Allure with a similar problem....clear coat peeling. Even though Country Coach termed the coach as having full body paint, it does not. My coach is a light cream beige color with a dark green to lighter green graphics design. All the light cream/beige colors were not painted. The gelcoat was tinted. Once the graphics was painted on, the entire coach was clear coated. As in AZ, here in FL the sun beats up on the gel coat big time. Once the UV begins to break down the gel coat and causes it to oxidize under the clear coat and causes the clear coat to release from the areas that were not painted. I took my coach to Coach Works near Orlando few years ago and the only approach they would attempt was to repaint the entire coach at a cost of $32k.

The gel coat can not oxidize under the clear coat is cracked. Think about it no oxygen/air can get to the gel coat if the clearcoat is solid. Very fine cracking most often referred to as hazing is the early stage. This allows air and water to penetrate Many manufacturers had issues with the clearcoat failing over large dark areas, blacks and browns and even maroon. The thought is the large dark areas absorbed heat and expanded more possibly causing or at least contributing to the problem.

Hard to say. If you can see strands of fiberglass under the peeling areas then the jel coat is indeed peeling off. If the substrate is smooth then it's probably the paint system that's peeling. In any case, you should be able to get a quality paint job done for 10 to 15k.

There is a year old thread on either IRV2 or RV.net that shows an older Magna that was repainted in Oregon for about $10,000. It looked good in pictures, but quality is determined by passage of time.
